Three-Year M.S. Plan
The baccalaureate degree in many fields outside computer science may not constitute adequate preparation for the mathematical and technical aspects of graduate study in computing. Students with such a background who nevertheless are seriously interested in a graduate degree in computer science may achieve the needed preparation by combining suitable undergraduate coursework with the regular program of graduate study requiring an additional year of coursework. Students beginning this work should have one year of calculus equivalent to MAT 295 and MAT 296, and at least one high-level programming language equivalent to CPS 196 Introduction to Computer Programming: C, or ECS 102 Introduction to Computing. (See Syracuse University Undergraduate Catalog for descriptions of MAT 295, MAT 296, CPS 196, ECS 102.) The following three-year plan of combined undergraduate and graduate coursework provides the student with the preparation described above, needed for completion of the graduate courses for the M.S. Courses numbered below 500 do not carry graduate credit and constitute the intermediate preparation needed for graduate courses listed later in the plan. Requirements for the M.S. in computer science remain as described above.

The Masters program is designed to be flexible enough to accommodate the needs of two kinds of students: those who have just completed an undergraduate degree in computer science and want to further their studies, and those with degrees in areas other than CS who seek to broaden their education in the discipline. For admission to the program, however, even those with non-CS degrees must have a strong enough background in CS courses that the admissions committee can make educated judgments about their potential for success in a graduate program. The extent of the background coursework that is required is a decision made by the admissions committee.

.
Admissions Requirements. ----
. From 1point 3acres bbs
Consideration for Master’s (M.S.) program admission requires completion of Graduate Studies’ online application, with fee payment, by the stated deadline. Admission requires a bachelor’s degree, three letters of recommendation, and a complete application form, including official transcripts, GRE scores, TOEFL scores or IELTS score if applicable, a statement of purpose, and a personal history statement.

Prerequisites. 1point 3acres

In addition to the admission requirements stated above, applicants are expected to demonstrate proficiency at the undergraduate level in four fundamental areas of computer science and mathematics. The specified UCD courses exemplify the material:

Computer Architecture        ECS 154A (Computer Architecture)
Mathematical Foundations        ECS 132 (Probability and Statistical Modeling for Computer Science) or MAT 135A (Probability) or STA 131A (Introduction to Probability Theory), and one additional upper-division mathematics course. .и
Programming Languages        ECS 140A (Programming Languages)
Theoretical Foundations        ECS 120 (Theory of Computation) or ECS 122A (Algorithm Design and Analysis)
Operating Systems        ECS 150 (Operating Systems and System Programming)
These are referred to as the undergraduate proficiency requirements.. 1point3acres

Deficiencies.1point3acres

Students may be admitted with one or more deficiencies in the undergraduate proficiency requirements. It is expected that the student will complete the undergraduate proficiency requirements by the end of the first academic year of residence. This deadline may be extended by approval of the Graduate Advisors Committee of the Graduate Group

We are interested in recruiting graduate students from a variety of fields. Computer Science is pervasive and touches a lot of application domains; it is a strength to have broader experience and knowledge. We also have a goal of contributing skilled and well-trained individuals to our nation's workforce. Our degrees are technical, and require a technical background, which is appropriate given that we are in the College of Engineering at N.C. State.. .и

The subjects we believe are necessary for success in our graduate program are:

Mathematics: calculus (2 or 3 semesters), probability and statistics (typically at a junior or senior level), and discrete math. A course in linear algebra can also be helpful.
Programming and algorithmic thinking: 2 semesters of objected-oriented programming (Java, C++, or the like), and a course in data structures. A course in algorithm analysis / automata theory is worth considering.
Computer systems: a course on computer organization, and possibly a course on operating systems.
At N.C. State, these undergraduate courses and their descriptions are as follows:

two- or three-semester calculus sequence (MA141, MA241, MA242)
linear algebra (MA305 or MA405)
probability and statistics (ST370 or MA421)
discrete math (CSC226)
object-oriented programming (CSC116 and CSC216)
data structures (CSC316)
algorithms or automata theory (CSC333)
computer organization and assembly language (CSC236)
operating systems (CSC246)
If you have taken all of these, great, you are ready for graduate school! Otherwise, you will have to decide which ones you wish to take before applying. Only you can judge whether courses taken elsewhere are "close enough", or whether work experience or self-study substitutes for some of these classes. Just be aware that the above are the expectations of our faculty.
. From 1point 3acres bbs
All or almost all of these Computer Science prerequisites at NC State are available online to non-degree seeking students. See the NDS program and the Computer Programming Certificate for more information. Standard math courses are commonly available from any reputable community or 4-year college.

All aspects of an application are reviewed before making admissions decisions, including previous degrees and coursework, personal statements, etc. We do not admit conditionally or provisionally. We have had many prospective applicants successfully make up gaps in their preparation, then apply and get admitted, do well in the graduate program, and go on to very good opportunities. This includes talented individuals who came from a variety of backgrounds: business, other branches of engineering and science, the liberal arts, etc.
. 1point3acres.com
Our purpose is not to keep people out of computing or discourage pursuit of a graduate degree. It is just the opposite! At the same time, the above is meant to prepare students for a successful experience in graduate schoo

Admission to the graduate program requires a bachelor's degree in Computer Science (or a closely related field), with courses covering all core CS topics, including: computer organization or architecture, automata and computability theory, data structures, algorithms, databases, programming languages, operating systems and networks. If the student does not have a degree in computer science, he/she must demonstrate this proficiency via junior/senior undergraduate level coursework or relevant job/project experience covering these areas.

Students of exceptional promise with non-standard background or who lack certain requirements may be considered for admission to the program on a provisional basis. These students will typically need to take additional CS courses as specified in their offer letter.
