One Ph.D. Research Assistant (RA) position in Civil Engineering is available in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at University of Hawai’i at Manoa (UHM). The successful applicant, starting from Fall 2017, is expected to conduct research in the area of bio-mediated and bio-inspired geotechnics under supervision of Dr. Ningjun Jiang.
The successful applicant will receive a full tuition waiver and stipend. The student is expected to work twenty hours per week for an eleven-month duty period. To be qualified for this position, students first need to be admitted to the graduate program at UHM. Applicants should hold a MS degree in civil engineering or equivalent. Those with a Bachelor degree are also welcome to apply and may start with Master program with an intention to transfer to PhD one year later. The successful applicant should have a solid background in fundamentals of soil behaviour and experimental methods in soil mechanics. Experience in geoenvironmental engineering and/or geomicrobiology is desirable. The applicants are also expected to meet all departmental standard admission requirements (e.g., GPA, GRE, and English proficiency tests).
Dr. Ningjun Jiang is an Assistant Professor in Civil Engineering at UHM. His research interests include bio-mediated geotechnics, geoenvironmental engineering, innovative geomaterials, geo-hazards mitigation, ground improvement, and petroleum geotechnics. Before joining UHM, he was a postdoctoral researcher at University of Cambridge, UK. He received his Ph.D. degree from Cambridge as well.
UHM is the flagship campus of the University of Hawai‘i System and a Carnegie doctoral university with a strong emphasis on research and graduate education. The CEE department offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees. Current enrolment is 300 undergraduate students, 60 graduate students with 20 faculty members. As the only civil engineering program in the State of Hawai’i, our graduates are found in nearly every public and private engineering agency and company in Hawai’i, where many of them are in leadership positions.
