说说信的开头：

端木觉得既然还在申请阶段，email还是professional些的好，本人倾向于正式写法

正式的： （最好用冒号，虽然逗号也可以接受）
“To Whom It May Concern: ” 不知道收信人的时候最常用，不过能找到收信人的名字的话，还是用名字最好
“Dear Sir/Madam：” 好像也可以，千万不要只写 “Sir”。。。 性别歧视也是很严重的问题

小秘大多是staff，“Dear Mr. XX: ” or "Dear Ms. XX: "
不过有的系也有教授兼职的，最好是去系里主页看一下人家的简单介绍，如果他/她有PHD的话，成为写 “Dear Dr. XXX:”
一般从first name可以判断出是男是女，不熟悉的名字google一下；实在找不到也没办法 - -b”

非正式的：“Hi/Hey John/Jane, ”
这个就不多说了，别把人家名字拼错就成  ^^

纸质材料只寄了ps和成绩单  圣诞前到的 一放假就没录入系统  节后状态就completed了  过了几天就evaluation  又过两天就academic review了  效率还是不错的

Mrs. 是指已婚的，除非知道人家已经结婚了。Ms. 是通用的

form letter就是那种写一封然后可以群发的信，固然是你不知道对方的姓名和身份，但是更重要的是表现出你并不在意对方的身份，而在意这封信的通用性。“致相关人士”，这里whom令人感到whomever的意味。

有些人认为一对一场合下to whom it may concern是acceptable，但是仍有很多人认为其rude。

不客气，我之前也只是有个大概印象，经过一番考证，自己的概念也明晰了很多:)
实际上这里的问题在于对“正式”一词的理解。我们初次给小米或者教授写信，要写的“正式”。而“to whom it may concern”和“dear sir/madam”这样的开头，也是“正式”书信的写法。但是此正式非彼正式。后者是指冷冰冰的那种官僚口吻，就相当于中文里面“兹证明XXX”或者“特此通知”的语气。中文里面，即使我们给长辈或者上级写信，也不可能用个“兹”或者“特此”吧。这是后者所谓formal的含义。而我们一对一的通信，就算再正式，也是conversational letter，不是后面那种含义上的formal。
