You gotta double check how strong he and his group is...
Last year a PhD student from Tsinghua transfered from Stanford to join his group. The only one graduated PhD from his group became a faculty at Columbia University. They are amazingly productive and he is widely considered a genius professor both here and in Caltech.

Besides Hossein, John Choma is doing ultra-low power analog IC design and he is the BEST lecturer I met in USC. A new guy joined USC from Atheros last year, Mike Chen from Berkeley, is doing ADC here.
No TA or RA position is opened for master students by EE department at USC now. I never heard any EE master students got financial aid from doing RA with professors in Fall 2009 or Fall 2010.

Check out career fair at both USC and UCSB and you will find the difference. I don not agree with alumni network being useless for USC. Because a VP at Oracle is a former student of a professor here, all students got B+ got intervews from Oracle last year. |
