话说LZ的例子很励志啊，我也想转CS，今年申14spring

看完说说看法:
1.小标题很新颖，使文章结构很清晰
2.LZ不愧是学新闻的，文笔不错
3.看的出LZ为转专业做了很多努力
4.LaTeX不那么重要，用起来熟能生巧，LZ留点笔墨写CS吧。
5.motivation不够，为什么那多新闻人接触技术，唯独你要转行？我写过一个高中做游戏mod(就是篡改游戏)的例子，我觉得不错，康奈尔面试官也说很有意思~~LZ可以参考一下，突出个人经历，而不是行业现象。
6.LZ应该多强调自己是个合适的学生，有能力的学生，而不只是个努力的学生。你觉得教授更喜欢“所以事情都很快完成”还是“学生在很勤奋地做事”？
7.LZ还要思考这样个问题:为什么教授不招CS学生，而要找文科生？也许你身上有一般CS学生没有的特质？也许你之前的专业能做不一样的贡献？也许你读CS有一个不一样的目标？

嗯嗯，很好的建议。不过我已经申请结束啦，说不定以后再有力气折腾的时候可以用得上~

关于为啥只有少部分干新闻的人转行，我的答案是：4年新闻系消沉了意志懒惰了大脑，别的什么都干不了了，转不了。

Why Change: Embrace Technology

In the second semester of my junior year, I served a four-month internship in Southern Daily,
which is one of the most famous newspapers in China. My work mainly involved news reports
about medical insurance, social welfare and financial policy in Guangzhou. The position trained
me into a true journalist. It also facilitated me to concern the development of media industry. I
witnessed the difficulties of traditional media industry in the face of shocking changes brought

Nowadays, readers feel more comfortable to collect information on Internet via computer,
mobilephoneandotherelectronicequipments. Besides, thetraditionalwayofcomposinganews
story--by articles and pictures--is also being challenged. Computational journalism and data
journalism have been already prevailing in the U.S. and Europe; and it's reasonable to predicate
that with the development in artificial intelligence, natural language processing, data mining and
other related fields in Computer Science, many jobs of journalists and editors will be done by
computers in the upcoming decades. Though such revolutions seem far from reality in China, it's
obvious that if traditional media cannot properly embrace the new situation, they will not be able
to function well as the role of watch dog in a democratic society. More importantly, I realized
that I need to revise my knowledge structure to survive myself in the IT-dominated future.我觉得你花了一大段在讲现状，一句话讲自己，多浪费字


From Reporter to Coder: An Adventure

Inspired by these facts and consideration, I began to study Computer Science by myself
during the internship. Every day after my work in news room, I went back home to study mathe-
matics and foundation course of Computer Science with the help of MIT OCW until mid-night. I
had a lot of work to do in the daytime, thus the only thing I could compensate was my sleep time.
Being away from campus,I could not take relevant course in the university and had to study alone
without any comrade or instructor. When I was stuck with confusions, I had to search on Google
or enquire strangers via social network (In order to have better communication, I learnt LATEX as
well). When my internship in news room ended, I also successfully finished those courses.赞，不过可以明确说下你self-motivated

After back to campus in my senior year, I took a course of C Programming and contin-
ued self-study with the help of OCW.没明白刚刚说不能take class也没老师，现在又可以了 In the MIT 6.00(Introduction to Computer Science and
Programming), I wrote an automatic-cleaning-robot program with Python. In the MIT 6.006(In-
troduction to Algorithm), I was amazed about the algorithm's essential role in improving the per-

and decently. During studying these courses, I felt myself like an adventurer who found a new

in Computer Science. Finally I decided to pursue a master degree in computer science after my
graduation from Journalism School.感觉你本科学的东西不能浪费啊，你可以写记者要写文章，文章要well organized，那么cs在做程序设计的时候也要well organized，所以你的记着功底就用上了，从这方面去思考，挖掘点共性


A Difficult Decision

To switch from Journalism to Computer Science is really a risky decision for me. Computer
Science is a field that seems totally different from journalism. It means a distinct knowledge
sphere and indicates a great change in my career path.虽然我知道你下面有however之类的转折，但是不要强调弱点，ao看到你说这个说1次，其他的说1次，读完以后只记得弱点咋办？ Though I have never doubted my inter-
est and enthusiasm in Computer Science since the day I finished the MIT 6.00 course one and
half years ago, considering the cost and obstacles in my way, I still wondered, without solid un-
dergraduate Computer Science background, whether I can survive an intensive and competitive
Computer Science master program.

This confusion bothered me all the time until the day of January 17, 2012, one of the most
memorable days in my life. On that day I successfully accomplished my first full marathon in
Xia'men International Marathon. After incessantly running 42.195km, overcoming the extreme
exhaustion and several times of convulsion, I finally ran across the finish line with a record
of 4hr34min. At that moment of accomplishment, besides the joy of success, I was also filled
with confidence and determination: since I can turn myself from a gym-loser into a amateur
marathonrunnerwithin6monthsofintensivetraining,IcanalsosucceedinthefieldofComputer
Science through my dedication and enthusiasm. The experience of marathon gave me huge
encouragement and confidence. From that day on, I made up my mind to pursue a master degree
and a career in Computer Science.


Before, Now and Future

In 2008, I chose journalism as my major in university, with the view to making contribution
to the society, particularly to the process of China's democratization. During the study, I delved
myself into reading great books in political philosophy. These great books facilitate me to con-
template the role of media in a democratic society. Furthermore, I served in a student-managed
media as a journalist focusing on breaking news and investigative reports and soon became one
of the top journalists in the campus.

Though being disappointed by some political-propaganda
courses, I still had good performance in many others. I was the best student in the class of News
Writing and my investigative story was discussed by faculties on their meeting. In the course of
. History of Chinese Journalism, my final paper was highly praised by the professor because I did
an original research which outlines the media reports during the Changchun Siege in the Chinese
Civil War.没明白这个和cs的关系

However, endeavor in journalism can hardly heal这个次老这么用怪用compensate？catch up？ my disadvantage in Computer Science.
So I plan to study by myself before the entrance date to be well prepared for the intensive grad-
uate study. After being admitted to your university, I will take prerequisite courses as soon and
efficiently as possible to heal my academic deficiency. If possible, I would like to participate
research in labs and internship in industry to enhance my opportunity in further education and
industry. I would like to start my career in an interdisciplinary position between journalism and
Computer Science. Since I'm quite well trained in the journalism sphere, I deeply believe your
university will provide excellent academic environment and career opportunities for me to fulfill
my ambition in Computer Science. It's a long and rough way. However, I have accomplished
many goals by diligence and perseverance and I firmly believe that it will also be fully realized
through dedicating to it.
