There are several Ph.D. positions available immediately for enthusiastic individuals in the Robot Autonomy and Navigation (RAN) Lab at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. We are looking for self-motivated researchers to work in areas including marine/aerial/ground robotics, autonomous
navigation, and multi-robot systems. Desired candidates should have both a strong background in theoretical analysis and hands-on experience in robot prototyping and testing. Successful applicants will conduct research on one or more of the following topics:
Topic 1: Autonomous Navigation
We are interested in novel navigation/localization solutions that help enhance the capability and intelligence of mobile robots in large-scale environmental sensing missions. We address the critical issue of GPS-denied localization in long- term missions and the associated environmental sensing problems. Focus areas include concurrent navigation and sensing, long-term (life-long) autonomy, sensor fusion, dynamics learning, and marine robotics.
Topic 2: Multi-Robot System
We are also interested in the modeling and decentralized control of multi-robot systems. Focus areas include the coordination of multi-robot systems under the influence of strong geophysical circulations, human-swarm interaction, and swarm security and privacy. Candidates with a background in control theory, graph theory, and distributed system are preferred.
