Could you provide some information about the class size? How many MS students do you plan to admit 2013 Fall?
Many thanks!

I am very happy to hear about yourinterest in our program. Biostatistics is an exciting area for postgraduatestudy! We do not have a quota number of students to admit. You are not in competition with other students for MS admissions.
Ourapplication deadline for fall 2013 admission to the MS or PHD program is December15, 2012. In order to be fullyconsidered for funding, you must apply by December 15th. We havebeen warned that visa issues for International students being accepted forstudy in the U.S. from abroad are taking a long time to be resolved, so Irecommend applying as soon as possible for the fall term. Applicationswill be considered after the deadline has passed, although decisions related tofunding favor applications that make it in by the deadline. Decisionsabout entry into our program are made by the Admissions Committee whichincludes several faculty members. The decision isbased upon grades in relevant courses taken from your transcript(s), GREscores, three letters of recommendation (which can now be submitted online) anda Statement of Purpose. We recommend applying for the MS program if you do nothave a graduate degree comparable to our MS in Biostatistics. There is a fasttrack available within the MS program for those intending to go on to our PhDprogram. Minimumprerequisites for entry into our Master’s program includethree semesters of calculus, an introductory course in statistics orbiostatistics, and a course in linear or matrix algebra. Any additional coursesin mathematics, statistics, or the biological sciences are certainly helpfulbut not required. A recent survey of our incoming students has also suggestedthat an introductory probability course can be helpful in the program. Thequickest way to take the GRE is to arrange to take it online. You can find outspecific details on how to do this at http://www.gre.org/. Once taken, thecomputer based test should have results sent within 10 – 15 days. It isgenerally expected that applicants show a combined score of 1100 on the verbaland quantitative components of the Aptitude Test of the Graduate RecordExamination (GRE). More recent GRE scores reporting an analytical writingmeasure scored 0 to 6 are generally expected to show skill at the level of 4.5or above for admission to the PhD program. Many students applying to the PhDprogram already have a master’s degree inbiostatistics or statistics. However, particularly well-qualified students witha relevant bachelor’s degree and astrong academic record may be admitted directly to the PhD program.(邮件里虽然这么说,但是据说每年科大都有人拿到PhD offer,只是听说,lz木有confirm) Foreignstudents are also required to take a TOEFL exam as part of the applicationprocess. Information on minimum requirements for TOEFL scores can be foundhere: EnglishProficiency Requirements . Students withan undergraduate degree from an institution where the language of instructionis English may waive the TOEFL requirement. We encourage students without anundergraduate degree from an English speaking institution to submit TOEFLscores. Allapplicants to the MS and PhD programs are considered for funding as eitherGraduate Student Instructors (GSI) or Graduate Student Research Assistants(GSRA), according to their existing qualifications. Decisionsrelated to funding usually take place in March on a competitive basis. Students who areselected for teaching or research positions are notified of their award on arolling system during this time period. Iwill be pleased to answer any questions you might have about the admissionsprocess. I look forward to seeing your application and wish you success in yourfuture studies!
