haohao, a common problem that I see in candidates is that they tend to give very theoretic explanations, maybe it's just that my position is more applied, and ppl tend to want a more intuitive and approachable answer. . ----
typical questions include : explain what's a pvalue or power, if the candidate gets to the gist of "prob rejecting null hypothesis under null", it's not a good sign. they usually want to hear a simpler answer...
. Χalso another important skill - data hacking - i wonder how this can be picked up . it is not easily summarized but i do think there can be a few instructions on what to learn.
so far i can think of: Head First Java is a good book to learn by onself.
For Py, other than Udacity, Leaning Python etc usual books, Python for Data Analysis would be a good one to read.
Also there are the typical R books, R in Action etc.
Little SAS book. But i am not that familiar with SAS - i just learned the necessary PROCS when I took the core courses like mixed model or survival.

SQL is easy, i think the section in "programming interview exposed" is good enough. I personally took the coursera course (now moved to another site) and found it to be useful.
maybe excel, pivot table, and VBA if finance?
currently i am interested in gathering info on this. I am also learning and would appreciate tips/help on this.
