The Experimental Fluid Mechanics Laboratory in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth has one or two fully-funded Ph.D. positions available starting from Spring or Fall 2021. Visiting students/scholars are always welcome.
About the Experimental Fluid Mechanics Laboratory
The Experimental Fluid Mechanics Laboratory, led by Prof. Hangjian Ling, is broadly interested in fluid dynamic problems at the interface of material, biological and environmental sciences. We develop advanced measurement technologies to characterize fluid flows as well as animal movements in complex environments. Our goal is to uncover the underlying physical laws, and harness them to solve the critical energy and environmental issues in our society. The current research projects include: (i) Development of textured super-hydrophobic surfaces for anti-biofouling and drag reduction; (ii) Turbulent boundary layers and multiphase flows; (iii) Particle tracking and flow measurement using digital holography, stereo-imaging, PIV; and (iv) Collective motions of cells, fish, and birds.
About the PI
Prof. Hangjian Ling is an Assistant Professor at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. He received Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 2017, and held a Postdoc position at Stanford University from 2017 to 2019. Dr. Ling’s work has been published in several high-impact journals including Nature Ecology and Evolution, Nature Communications, Proceedings of the Royal Society B, and Journal of Fluid Mechanics.
About this position
This position is to conduct an experimental investigation of turbulent boundary layers and wetting transitions over textured super-hydrophobic surface. The super-hydrophobic surface is an emerging material with wide applications across Ocean Engineering, Clean and Renewable Energy, and Life Science. The students will have opportunities to closely collaborate with world-class material scientists and industry partners.
Qualification
The ideal candidate is expected to have a strong background in fluid mechanics and optical measurement technology. Experience in image analysis, Particle Imaging Velocimetry (PIV), and CAD drawing are preferred.
Contact
Interested individuals should send Prof. Ling (hling1@umassd.edu) the full CV (including GPA , TOELF and GRA scores, research experience, publications, and contact information of three references) and the electronic copy of transcripts. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until filled.
