1- Automatic Video Detection Position (one research assistant position)
About us: The George Washington University (GW) Transportation Program (GWTP) conducts fundamental and applied research in multiple areas, including 1) driver and pedestrian detection and modeling, 2) traffic flow theory, 3) transportation safety, 4) network flow problems (social and transportation networks), 5) intelligent transportation systems (including connected and autonomous systems with V2V and V2I communications), and 6) evacuation modeling and emergency management. The GWTP team is composed of faculty members and students from different backgrounds. Our team has successfully established a collaborative active research environment. GWTP projects are often cross- or interdisciplinary and are strengthened by research groups from various fields. Moreover, the GWTP research is integrated into a multidisciplinary educational curriculum that draws from different departments at the GW School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
Description: The George Washington University Transportation Program are looking to work with one graduate assistant who would be involved in developing/deploying the devices and developing the models in order to detect traffic trajectory data through multiple technologies. The assistant will have to develop AI approaches for such purposes including AI approaches for video detection and tracking. The trajectory data should be differentiated in real time (i.e. identification) with the possibility of capturing the movement of autonomous vehicles, pedestrians, scooters, and/or cyclists in an urban multi-modal environment.
Requirements:
- In process of an undergraduate or Masters of Science (MS) degree in Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or any other related quantitative field with the need to pursue a Philosophical Doctorate (PhD) or MS degree in Transportation Engineering in the Fall of 2021.
- Experience with computer vision application development and deployment.
- Experience with Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Deep Learning (DL), smart technology devices, robotics or other related technology areas.
Desired:
- Experience with traffic engineering and autonomous vehicle research.
- Strong Mathematical and/or Physics Modeling background.

2- Hardware Training Students (up to three fellowship positions)
About us: The hired fellows are expected to work with both the Transportation Engineering Research Group and a leading start-up company: Moment AI. Moment AI is a rising Driving Autonomy startup focused on revolutionizing the global automotive safety space. In collaboration with the George Washington University Transportation Research Program, Moment AI is developing AI systems that merge the recent advancements in AI healthcare and driving autonomy. The company have been a part of three accelerators/incubators, most notably as a member of Launch (portfolio company: Uber) and Softbank (portfolio companies: Cruise, Uber, DoorDash). Moment AI has additionally been named an A.I. startup partner of NVIDIA (Tesla AI partner) and has received the support of several big-name companies Fortune 100 companies. The company is also working closely with a top Fortune 10 company which involves integrating our system into hardware.
Description: Moment AI and the George Washington University Transportation Program are looking to work with students who want to develop innovative AI hardware. The student(s) should have knowledge in integrating software into hardware. The students(s) will be responsible for understanding the current state of Moment AI’s technology, and tasked with various AI integration such as AI voice, computer vision and software that uses ML and DL. It would be great if the student is someone with experience in 3D print and want to work along Moment AI as we scale to manufacture. You will get to b parts of the steps and seeing the growth.
Requirements:
- In process of a MS or PhD in Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or any other related quantitative field with the need to pursue a PhD or MS degree in Transportation Engineering in the Fall of 2021.
- Experience with computer vision application development and deployment
- Experience with user experiences and solutions architecture.
- Experience with AI Voice integration, ML, DL, smart technology devices, robotics.
Desired:
- Experience with developing software, integrating code for hardware.
- Strong Experience with AWS, GCP or similar cloud offerings.
