Dear .......,
We are pleased to learn of your interest in undertaking graduate study in our department and would like to provide you with additional program and admissions information on behalf of Professor .......
The Department offers graduate programs at the M.S. and Ph.D. levels in several areas of concentration: Advanced Infrastructure Systems (AIS), including programs in: planning, design, construction, computer-aided engineering and finance and operation of civil infrastructure systems; Environmental Engineering, Sustainability, and Science(EESS), including programs in: air, geo-environmental, water and green design; and Materials, Mechanics and Computers (MMC), including programs in: earthquake engineering and new materials. The Department also participates in cooperative programs in Biomedical Health Engineering, Business, Architecture and Engineering, and Public Policy.
The M.S. program is offered in two formats. The traditional format is the project/thesis option, and typically requires three semesters of effort. Very rarely will research funding be available for a student completing a MS with thesis work. In these infrequent cases, the faculty member inviting the student to do this research will contact the applicant directly, and the admission letter will specify the source of the support and the expected duration of the program. The Professional MS option involves no thesis work and can be completed in as little as two semesters (nine months) of effort.
Admission is based upon a student's overall academic and research backgrounds, GRE and TOEFL scores, academic transcripts, statement of purpose and recommendation letters and not upon financial need. Financial aid is available in the form of graduate research assistantships, fellowships, and scholarships on a competitive basis. Although not exclusive, RA's are typically offered to direct entry and PhD candidates who are also expected to participate in teaching activities, which we consider to be an integral part of graduate education. It is impossible to predict whether a potential applicant will receive financial aid until we have received their completed application, transcripts, letters of recommendation and GRE scores. The application will then be reviewed by several members of the faculty and a decision will be made. We have a limited number of assistantships available and competition for them is very tight. Due to the increasing number of well-qualified applicants, faculty are unable to comment on an applicant's qualifications until after the application is received, circulated among all of the faculty for comments and a decision is made.
The academic year at Carnegie Mellon consists of two semesters, the Fall term beginning in late August and the Spring term beginning in early January. The application deadline for Fall admission is January 15 and the Spring admission deadline is September 15. Graduate students can be admitted for either semester, although August admission is preferable.
The GRE (general) examination is required of all applicants but we do not have a minimum score requirement. The TOEFL test is required of all international applicants whose "native" language is not English. The minimum acceptable internet-based TOEFL total score is 84 and the subset scores are reading, 22; listening, 22; speaking, 18; and writing, 22. However, we are willing to accept the IELTS exam rather than the TOEFL exam. If so, the minimum acceptable IELTS total exam score is 7.0. Registration for the GRE and TOEFL exams are available through the Educational Testing Services (ETS). The GRE school code for Carnegie Mellon is 2074 and the department code for the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is 1102. For more information regarding the IELTS exam please feel free to visit their webpage at [
Application material and more general information is available on the CEE webpage at www.ce.cmu.edu. Answers to many questions can be found on our websites Frequently Asked Questions and application instructions can be found at our Online Application page. Please feel free to contact us should you encounter any problems accessing this information on the web. We look forward to receiving your application for graduate studies.
