PhD studentship in Geotechnical Engineering with CERN and Cambridge University : Cambridge, United Kingdom
A PhD Studentship is potentially available for a suitably qualified candidate to conduct research leading to the award of a PhD degree in the field of civil engineering. The studentship is part of the CERN doctoral student programme in collaboration with Cambridge University, with whom the student will work closely in the research of long-term behaviour of CERN tunnels.
DescriptionA PhD student will work together with Professor Kenichi Soga and Dr Mohammed Elshafie at Cambridge University and have a local supervisor at CERN on conducting geotechnical investigation on the long-term behaviour of CERN tunnel. The proposed work follows on from the previous PhD work at Cambridge on the long-term performance of London Underground tunnels by Wongsoraj (2007) and Laver (2010). The previous studies examined the tunnel-soil interaction by coupled hydro-mechanical modelling of ground deformation and seepage into the tunnel and the model was validated by field monitoring data. Recently an innovative fibre optic strain sensing system has been deployed at a 100 m section of CERN tunnel with measurements in both longitudinal and circumferential directions. Other conventional monitoring technologies have been also implemented. The main aims of the research are (i) to interpret the FO monitoring data as well as other instrumentation data, (ii) to evaluate the mechanism of long-term tunnel behaviour by numerical simulations of tunnel-soil interaction of the CERN tunnel and (iii) to predict potential magnitude of tunnel deformation in the long-term. The candidate should be qualified to at least first degree level with an upper second or first class honours degree in Civil Engineering. All information regarding the eligibility and appointment conditions to participate to the CERN doctoral student programme are available online at http://jobs.web.cern.ch/join-us/doctoral-student-programme.Please send a covering letter, a CV, your academic transcripts, and the names of two academic referees who can be contacted should you be short-listed, to Ms Amanda Pyatt, Geotechncial Group Administrator (Div D), Department of Engineering, Trumpington Street, Cambridge, CB2 1PZ, (Tel +44 (0)1223 332717, Fax +44 (0)1223 339713, email asp21@cam.ac.uk), to reach her not later than 5 November 2013.
