The Robotics and Intelligent Vehicle Automation Lab (https://www.egr.msu.edu/rival/) at Michigan State University (MSU) has two Ph.D. and two Postdoc openings available immediately. The projects include Robotics, Connected and Autonomous Vehicles, Dynamics-enabled Privacy, and Optimal Control. Highly motivated candidates with a strong background in control theory, vehicle dynamics, optimization, and/or machine learning are encouraged to apply. Ph.D. students will be supported with full scholarship and postdocs will be supported with a competitive compensation package including a $50K-$60K salary.
The Ph.D. student/post-doc will have opportunities to work closely with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), automotive manufacturers including Ford and General Motors, as well as suppliers such as Mitsubishi and DENSO. A wealth of resources and platforms are available, including connected and autonomous vehicles through the CANVAS program at MSU, agricultural robots, two mobile manipulators and various ground robots in the RIVAL lab, and access to the USDA Agricultural Service Lab.

Dr. Zhaojian Li is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the director of Robotics and Intelligent Vehicle Automation Lab at Michigan State University. He obtained M.S. (2013) and Ph.D. (2015) in Aerospace Engineering (flight dynamics and control) at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. As an undergraduate, Dr. Li studied at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Department of Civil Aviation, in China. Dr. Li worked as an algorithm engineer at General Motors from January 2016 to July 2017. His research interests include Robotics, Learning-based Control, Nonlinear and Complex Systems, and Connected and Automated Vehicles. He is a recipient of National Science Foundation CAREER Award.
