Did we have any interactions during class that I am likely to remember
you by? I ask because what schools generally want from a letter of
recommendation is to learn about things that they cannot see just by
looking at your transcript. Things like were you motivated, did you
ask good questions, did you display leadership potential and so on.
The kind of things that in order to answer I would need to be able to
remember specific interactions with you personally. Without this, I
could write a letter that talks about your grades and little else. It
would probably look bad on your application, but if you need an extra
letter writer and cannot find anyone more appropriate I could do this.

But you should be looking for letter writers based on who knows you
rather than whose class you enjoyed or even who gave you the best
grade. If you did internships or took smaller project based classes,
these would be much better places to look for letter writers generally
speaking. In large classes like 101, it is very difficult to know most
students well enough (especially months or years later) to say
anything useful.
