A friend told me to be more direct on what I did or did not say. so there is no confusion Here it is.
==========
Let me be clear. The Chinese Exclusion Act was racist. I have never said it was not, ever.
My point in the middle of a discussion on the suitability of critical race theory in K-12 education was that the Chinese Exclusion Act was not only driven by racism, but also driven by labor-related considerations at the time. Someone took a screenshot out of a members-only google group for local parents with a comment, which distorts my words, for what seem to be political reasons by people who disagree with my positions on other issues.
There was significant racism and discrimination against Chinese Americans historically, which continue today many years after the repeal of the Chinese Exclusion Act. In fact, those behind these attacks against me now are likely uncomfortable by the fact that I, a Chinese American woman, am vocal, with my own opinions and don't easily conform to the norm. People should be more honest and examine their own motivations before they attack me. As many of my constituents know, I spend a great deal of time studying the issues and I am not afraid to stand up to the status quo to demonstrate my positions with research and data. Instead of attacking each other based on sound bites, I invite people to have real conversations. Let's be role models for the future generations on how to have civil discourse on tough issues and still respect each other's viewpoints. |
