Fully-funded PhD positions are available at Prof. Yuzhang Lin’s research group in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Massachusetts Lowell (UMass Lowell). Admitted students will work on machine learning applications in renewable energy and smart power grids. Candidates are expected to have rich experience or solid background on machine learning or its applications. Experience or interest in sequence modeling, graph neural networks, reinforcement learning, and generative modeling are especially encouraged. No background on electrical engineering is required. The positions are supported by NSF CAREER Award and other external funding sources. The students will be co-advised by faculty experts in both machine learning and smart energy systems. Given satisfactory performance, long-term funding support (4-5 years) is available; higher summer salary than academic-year standard rates may also be available based on performance.
Prof. Yuzhang Lin is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UMass Lowell. He research interests cover the broad areas of smart power grid and renewable energy, cyber-physical systems and security, and machine learning applications. He team is currently working on a number of research projects funded by National Science Foundation (NSF), U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), and Office of Naval Research (ONR), many of which involves applications of state-of-the-art machine learning techniques. His team currently hosts 5 PhD students and 1 postdoc researcher. His team has close collaborations with other universities, national laboratories, and the industry. He is a recipient of the prestigious NSF CAREER Award.
