NC State University is based in Raleigh, North Carolina, one of the best places to live in the United States (ranked No. 6 in 2022-2023 by U.S. News & World Report). The university forms one of the corners of the Research Triangle together with Duke University in Durham and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. It is classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity“. For 2023, U.S. News & World Report ranks NC State tied for 79th out of all national universities and NC State's College of Engineering as 26th, with many of its programs ranking in the top 30 nationally. NC State's Nuclear Engineering program is considered as one of the best in the world and ranked No. 3 in the U.S.
Dr. Lingfeng He received his B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering from the Central South University in 2003 and a Ph.D. in Materials Science from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2009. He was a postdoctoral researcher and assistant scientist at Nagaoka University of Technology, Japan, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison before joining Idaho National Laboratory (INL) as a staff scientist in 2014. He was a distinguished staff scientist and High-Resolution Materials Characterization group lead prior to joining NC State as an Associate Professor of Nuclear Engineering in 08/2022. He studies materials behavior in extreme environments, with a focus on environmental degradation of materials in nuclear power systems. He aims to understand how the processing and radiation/corrosion environments affects the microstructure, mechanical/thermal properties, and structural integrity/durability of materials and components. He has published 123 peer-reviewed journal articles, with an H-index of 30 (according to Web of Science). Dr. He has been a mentor for 5 postdoctoral researchers (they are now 2 tenure-track faculty, 2 staff scientists, 1 Seaborg distinguished postdoc at INL), 2 graduate students (1 became a staff scientist at INL) , 7 summer intern students from Michigan, MIT, RPI, Texas A&M, Virginia Tech, Wisconsin at INL. He is the recipient of the INL Laboratory Director’s 2020 Exceptional Scientific Achievement Award.
Ph.D. candidates should have or will obtain their Bachelor/Master’s degrees in Materials Science, Nuclear Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Condensed Matter Physics, Applied Chemistry, or closely aligned field from an accredited college or university. Prior experience with materials synthesis/manufacturing, advanced microstructural characterization, electrochemistry, mechanical/thermal property measurements is highly valuated but not essential. The start date is Spring 2023 or Fall 2023. Due to the Covid, GRE might be waived under certain conditions.
