针对楼主同学所说的第二件事,是我们教务长给的答复。简言之教务长并不认可我们这次的petition,他认为“In short, I have no concerns whatsoever with the behavior of Professor 马赛克 that you cite in your petition.”并且给出了他的解释。教务长得回信我也附在下面。

“Speaker1: [00:00:25:24] No, I have a couple other questions that were related, [00:00:30:00] just in terms of how you're presenting the exam, because you the example you gave of the two black women feeling very disenfranchised and all that was interesting. I'm just wondering when you're looking at all this, if you're trying to break it down, racism versus sexism. And I know black women have a double burden that way. And so but I'm just sort of curious about that. And then also. You know, the example [00:01:00:00] you gave of the washing machine was very powerful. And I'm wondering, you know, my my field, you probably don't know is China and a direct co direct one of our a couple of our China centers. There is so much racism against black people in China. And so I'm just wondering if there's anything your office is doing with international students, because they're coming from a different [00:01:30:00] culture where that stuff is much more accepted. And, you know, we can't condone it. But it just sort of wondering when you're you're you're very sensitive to these issues and cultural issues and all of that. So I was just kind of curious if you're taking that into account with our international students who are coming here. And, you know, they it's perfectly fine in China to go up and touch someone's braids. And one of the students [00:02:00:00] I took over to China and she spoke Chinese. She's one of our Chinese studies minors. She got really sick and tired of being there. People saying, were you born with your hair like that, you know, and touching her hair. And it's one of the things that we don't really talk about, about our project centers. Our students go to these different places and they also experience racism where it's perfectly permitted to express racism. So I don't know if you're working with that too, but just to bring it up.”

简言之就是我们认为 “马赛克 教授通过个例归纳说中国存在普遍的种族歧视”这个观点是有失偏颇的,并且前一嘴刚提完“There is so much racism against black people in China”,接着就说“And so I'm just wondering if there's anything your office is doing with international students, because they're coming from a different culture where that stuff is much more accepted.”让在校的华人留学生和教授以及毕业校友们感到受到了伤害。
教务长的回信其实让我觉得很失望,失望的点再于他在原文中提及“Categorizing Professor 马赛克’s comments and questions in any other way is inaccurate and unacceptable and sending a broadly distributed email mischaracterizing Professor Rudolph’s comments was inappropriate and irresponsible.“ 也就是说,他不认为在这次会议中马赛克教授的言论有不妥之处,并且认为我们对教授的发言评论和问题进行分类是不准确和不可接受的,并且发送广泛分发的电子邮件错误地描述这位教授的评论是不恰当和不负责任的(然而我们其实并没有发电子邮件··什么年代了··)。
在地里已经不少年头了,这些年我也一直是致力于捞学弟学妹,宣传WPI给更多的校友。现在对于这个这件事情,各种声音都会有,有人认为小题大做,也有人会认为学校非常令人失望且有毒。据我们了解WPI不是唯一一个,现在也有很多其他的院校也在经历相同的事情。
对于一个大学来说, 总是有各种被掩盖的问题,但是它必须解决这些问题和困难。 作为WPI毕业的一名学生,我们在校时以身为WPI一份子为荣,离校以曾为学校一员而骄傲。我们的同学来自四海,我们从未因肤色,种族,性别等对他人而歧视,为何要受此偏见?我认为,从我看到视频,听到的声音,看到的提取的script中,我都切切实实看到了,听到了教授说“中国存在严重切普遍的歧视问题,并且存在歧视在中国是完全没有问题的”。这句话并不以上下文语境不同,初衷如何而改变。黑人不能被歧视,亚裔(华人)就可以直接被打上“中国种族歧视”的标签么这难道不是一种偏见?这也是为什么我们要组织签名,向教务长提出主张。目前认为这件事情XX教授做的不妥的教授/同学/校友们在寻求帮助以及合法的途径来实现自己的诉求。
无论如何,我们都希望母校更好,对学弟学妹更好,也希望大家能理性对待,谢谢。
