PhD Opening in adaptive structures at Stony Brook University

One fully funded Ph.D. position is available in the Dynamic Structures Lab at Stony Brook University (https://you.stonybrook.edu/pcelli/), under the mentorship of Paolo Celli, Assistant Professor in Civil Engineering (paolo.celli@stonybrook.edu). The intended starting semester is Fall 2023. The opening is for a student to perform research on the dynamics of adaptive structures, and this project sits at the intersection of structural dynamics, structural mechanics and network theory. A good applicant has a background in engineering, physics or mathematics, and is passionate about mechanics and its application to structural systems at various length scales. Familiarity with structural dynamics and control, and with notions of nonlinear mechanics are especially desired.

The research project involves both experiments and modeling. Moreover, the selected student will have the chance to expand/perfect their mechanics knowledge, to grow as an academic and to improve their communication and problem-solving skills, in an environment where the students' personal and professional growth is the top priority.

It is located on Long Island, a couple of miles away from the ocean and ~50 miles away from New York City. The University has a strong legacy in Mathematics and Physics, and it co-manages the Brookhaven National Laboratory. The College of Engineering and Applied Sciences is rapidly expanding. Our Civil Engineering Department is relatively new and unbound by tradition, with a strong core of motivated young faculty looking to re-define civil engineering research and, in Paolo's case, to explore unconventional structural solutions.
