PhD Recruitment Flyer:
Applications are invited for a full-time Ph.D. position in area of explainable machine learning and artificial intelligence for automated driving. The Ph.D. will be co-advised by Dr. Jian Hu, an associate professor of Industrial Engineering and Dr. Li, an associate professor of Statistics. A successful applicant will join a UM-Ford alliance project, collaborating with the Ford Research Innovation Center, on enhancing engineering safety for machine learning components in autonomous vehicles. The Ph.D. could be needed to work as a summer intern in Ford.
Machine learning plays an essential role in the development and operation of autonomous vehicles. Vehicles rely on machine learning to sense, perceive, and navigate their environment and accordingly any failures of the machine learning components endanger passengers and others on the road. The SOTIF (ISO 211448) standard requires to recognize performance limitation of machine learning components and reduce the hazards due to inadequate performance functionality and insufficient situational awareness. The project team intends to develop an online error detector, which monitors machine learning components, identify their misclassification for in-distribution and out-of-distribution data, triggers appropriate warnings, and informs drivers to take back control in a timely manner. The achievement of this project can greatly improve the safety of the level 3 autonomous driving system.
Admission requirements include a bachelor’s degree or above in mathematics, statistics, computer science, industrial engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related discipline; strong skills in mathematics, statistics, and programming (Python); minimum GPA of a 3.5 (4.0 scale); for applicants whose native language is not English, an English Language Proficiency exam (minimum scores 84 on the IBT TOEFL or 6.5 on the IELTS). Funding is guaranteed up to 5 years, which includes tuition, a competitive monthly stipend, and health insurance.
Application deadline: August 1, 2023 (All materials must be submitted by this date) |
