About This Position:
There are two immediate openings for Ph.D. students (Fall 2023) in the Aerospace Structures Reliability Laboratory at Auburn University, working with Dr. Wen Luo.
Group Website: https://sites.google.com/view/aerospace-reliability
Research Fields:
The Aerospace Structures Reliability Laboratory (ASRL) is poised to 1) push forward the understanding of rare-event stochastic failures of advanced aerospace materials/structures and to 2) design and fabricate super reliable composite structures used in extreme and uncertain environments. We seek to bring together reliability engineering, solid mechanics, and composite materials for failure risk modeling and“reliability-based material by design” for ultra-lightweight materials in aerospace, automotive, and wind energy applications.
Desirable Ph.D. applicants may have a background in Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering (Structures), Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, and Applied Mathematics and Statistics. Prior experience in probability and statistics, computational and experimental solid/structure mechanics, and composites are preferred but not required. A master's degree in related fields is also preferred.
Students are welcome to contact Dr. Wen Luo at wen-luo@caltech.edu with your CV, transcripts, and a brief introduction of research interests.
About the PI:
Dr. Wen Luo will join the Aerospace Engineering Department at Auburn University in August 2023. He is currently a postdoctoral research associate in the Space Structures Lab at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Department of Aerospace Engineering. Before joining Caltech as a postdoc, he obtained his Ph.D. from Northwestern University in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics. His research has been published in peer-reviewed journals like JMPS, IJSS, PNAS, JAM, and JEM.
About Auburn University:
