MS-only [EE@Stanford] 关于Stanford EE Master的一些事实和疑问

昨天上午接到了Stanford的EE Master，本来还挺高兴的，结果上网一搜，骂声一片，说这个Program水到不行，不过大家的根据好像都是那篇台湾人写的文章，信息来源未必可靠，可能还有点过时，所以我就问了下EE的一个academic advisor，得到了一些回复（我把自己问的问题和她的回复都贴到下面了）


第一回合：
问题：
1\ how many students are admitted to EE master program this fall?
2\ Do master students have research opportunities with faculty?
3\ what is the average pay of an international master student if he wants to find a job in California upon graduation? I’ve heard that famous companies usually hire PhD students, but not masters.

回复：
1) Each year there are 200 new incoming graduate students. Around 100 of these are MS-only students, and the other half are MS-PhD students.

2) Masters students do have the chance to do research with faculty members, but it's more difficult for MS students than MS-PhD students to get research. There are some students each year who transition from MS-only to MS-PhD, too.

3) Some companies actually prefer MS students to PhD ones because they feel the PhD ones are too theoretical or overeducated. I don't think there's a disadvantage for MS students as long as they build up good work or project experience.

Starting salary for a MS graduate is typically $60,000-$80,000 (US dollars), while PhD can be $70,000-$120,000 (also USD). There's a wide range because it depends on the job, the company, the individual's skills, and the general economic environment.

Thanks for your kind response, which inspires me some new questions.

I have heard that America has a very high tax rate. If I complete my master degree in three quarters (is this time right?), how much money will I spend in total (including tuitions, fees, living expense and so forth)? And how many years do you think I can earn this investment back? (Please exclude living expense, various taxes, and other expense in my working period after graduation.)

Although there may be some EE department handbooks or guides floating around that say an MS should be completed in three quarters (1 year), it's actually sort of an unreasonable goal. To do so would require taking five 3-unit classes every quarter, or 15 units/qtr, in order to get to the 45 unit requirement. Most students find three technical classes plus one non-technical (four total, or around 10-12 units) to be pretty full already, so five classes a quarter would be very very painful.

Many first year students find themselves overwhelmed during the first quarter with having to deal with coursework along with the adjustment to living somewhere entirely new, so I usually recommend being a little less ambitious at the outset (2 technical classes and one non-technical/easier class for the first quarter).

A more realistic goal is to finish the MS in 4-5 quarters. Graduate students are considered to be at full time status as long as they are taking 8 units a quarter; over 10 is considered a heavy load.

A year's worth of tuition, housing, fees, and living expenses is around $35,000-$42,000 USD. Assuming you take two full years (6 quarters) and receive no funding, TAships, or RAships, you will owe $70,000-$84,000 upon graduation. Unrealistically speaking, if you didn't eat, pay taxes, or live anywhere ($0 expenses), you could possibly pay it all back in a little more than a year, assuming your starting salary is in the $70,000 range. More realistically, with about $12,000 in federal taxes and another $24,000 in living expenses every year, you should be able to pay it off in 3-5 years.

有三个问题想请教下大家：
200人里有一半Master only students，一半MS-PhD，这个规模算水吗？
以中国人的平均收入来看，起薪只有7万吗？
Summer internship大概能挣多少钱呢？

1.stanford水应该是几年前吧，现在应该不水了吧。。前2年很少录人的吧。
2. 工科生70000 很正常吧。。不高不低

这么说STANFORD的MS ONLY也开始出了？能说下你是什么时候提交的申请吗？提交后有收到学校关于材料齐没齐或者开始审没有的邮件吗？

我是对科研没兴趣，并且读完想回国的，所以就不申PHD不申奖了~
