At XXXU, like most universities, we have a pretty standardized
admission process.  I get to have a lot of input into it, but in the
end, it is the committee that decides who we can and cannot admit each
year.  Our committee pays attention to letters of recommendation,
coursework, test scores, previous research, etc.  With that said, I do
get to have a lot of input into the admission process.  So I am very
happy that you've contacted me, and especially that you've contacted me
this early in the year.

这个老师almost有决定权，但是为了谨慎，人家说话很小心，当然这个也是事实。

应该是你背景不错，他觉得可以作为候选人之一，所以才这样说话的。
