I believe I met a true avoidant a few years back - we had been acquaintances for a few years and I wanted to gauge his interest and started chatting him up in private. Turns out he had a huge difficulty with saying no when it comes to breaking it off. I had to threaten him with deadlines in order to get a prompt "No", even though it was clear that not much remained in our relationship. Also, because he had a huge difficulty saying no when I invited him to events, he would make lies which of course I found out to be lies later. I felt like an idiot trying to understand what my fault was. However, understanding them and acting accordingly to "help them", that is not our responsibility and beyond our pay grade. they need to want to communicate and get out of their shell themselves to get better.
