I believe OPT-extension is of  the best interest of US nation.
1. US nation is the most diverse country ever exist in the world, it consists of immigration, reunion by immigration, helped by immigration. US is the most impressive country that founded by IMMIGRATION!  Who ever set their foot on this land could track their ancestor back to immigration except for the American aboriginal Indians. United States proud of its inclusive, which is the reason why it could become the place where new technology and knowledge were born in! Albert Einstein was a Germany who found  the theory of relativity in United States! Count how many Immigrations won noble prize for The United States! Without the OPT-extension, in this competitive society, American citizens can go back to school with a lot less cost to seek for another chance, but international students could only go back to their home country! United States is rejecting massive amount of international student who could have brought this country tremendous profit!
2. Some people argue that international student would decrease the chance that US citizen could get a job! First of all, international student who could survive in this competition won their status and job with their own hard work and talent! They didn't steal those job from US citizens! US citizens just haven't work hard enough to win those chances! Companies need good work forces no matter what nation or what race they are! If companies could not find satisfying work force locally, will they be considering fill the position with a "not so satisfying" candidates or ship the job opportunity somewhere else? Think about it!

As a PhD student do research in the area of Operating System, I have seen many brilliant researchers in our areas. These brilliant researchers, mainly from CMU/UC Berkerley/MIT/Standford/Pricenton/UCSD etc, have made great contributions not only to the research area of operating system, but also to the development of IT industry.

However, some of these researchers are foreigners that you guys hated. Let me give you a short list of them:

Ion Stoica (http://www.cs.berkeley.edu/~istoica/), full professor of UC Berkerley, inventor of Chord System, which is the greatest contribution to modern peer-to-peer system. Without him, you guys probably will not know what is Napster, and you will not know how to use network-TV channel. He is Romanian.

Kai Li (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kai_Li), full professor of Princenton University, noted for his pioneering contributions to Distributed Shared Memory (DSM) and co-founding the leading storage deduplication company Data Domain Inc. which was acquired by EMC Corporation in 2009. He is known as the richest professor in America. He is Chinese.

Sanjay Ghemawat (http://research.google.com/pubs/SanjayGhemawat.html), top research scientist at google, listed as Silicon Valley's top and best programmers. He and Jeff Dean are the inventor of Modern MapReduce Model, which leads to the invention of Hadoop Big Data System. He is Indian.

Matei Zaharia (http://people.csail.mit.edu/matei/), assistant professor of MIT, inventor of Spark System, co-founder and CTO of Databricks. Databricks is known as one of the most promising startup in Silicon Valley. He is Romanian.

Frans Kaashoek (https://pdos.csail.mit.edu/~kaashoek/), a Dutch computer scientist, entrepreneur, and Charles Piper Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Student of Andy Tanenbaum. Co-founder of Sightpath Inc. He is Dutch.

Yuanyuan Zhou (https://cseweb.ucsd.edu/~yyzhou/), Qualcomm Chair Professor at University of California, San Diego, Co-founder of Pattern Insight and WHOVA. She is Chinese.

Guido van Rossum (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guido_van_Rossum), author of Python programming language. He is Dutch.

If you search online, there are so many great people who have done great things to America some of you guys cannot ever do even in a 100 years. However, they are foreigners. In the future we can still see some other people do great things like this: however, maybe they are just some foreign students studying towards their PhD/Master degree in US currently. So, my point is, if you cut this opt-extension program, will America be great again???????????

There is no reason to cut this program.

I strongly support the STEM OPT extension because:
1, Before I chose to study abroad, I had serval options. Some of my friends went to Europe such as German, and some of them went to Australia and New Zealand. I decided to pursue my Master's Degree in US because it not only provided one of the best higher education, but also give international students a chance to do optional practical training which can be as long as 27 months for STEM students. This policy attracting many international students coming to US, bring up consumption and helping raising US economy.

2, As a graduate students, I've known many international students determine to do research/development work  after graduation. Normally, a project lasts for 24-36 months. A 12-month OPT is far too short to finish any research projects. For those people who do not apply H1 visa or seek for permanent residentship, a OPT STEM extension is very necessary.
