What do you want to do with your life? 想明白了这个问题，为什么申请也自然有答案了。博士也好，硕士也罢，学位只是寻梦旅程的一个路标而已，这期间的能力提高和机遇才是关键。

苏东坡写过“博观而约取，厚积而薄发。” 申请不只是考考试，填填表。其中的方方面面也不是三言两语就能讲明白的。端木从08年关注申请到现在，看过n多篇文章和帖子，借了n多本书，笔记也是满满一本。不是在炫耀什么，是想强调前期积累的重要。

强烈推荐这本书，除了例文外，前面几章关于申请的也很有启发意义

一个小时多的演讲，很实用的时间管理技巧，终身受用
[强烈推荐 Randy Pausch 的 Last Lecture，知之为知之，不知Google之]

大块的事物一口咽不下，分成小块就好了，任务也是同理。

进度表格：申请学校，各项任务预计完成时间，及实际完成时间
电子表格，纸质表格，whiteboard 均可，适合的才是最好的

为每所学校建立一个文件夹，在太傻上某个帖子里面读到的（不记得原作者了 >< ）
看起来过于简单了，但确实有效

cover letter： 在寄材料的时候简单写封信说明包裹中有哪些材料
存下和小秘/grad school的通信记录。如果你的申请材料比较不寻常，在cover letter加以说明并附上通信记录。

Statement：

There are two main goals of the personal statement:
to create a portrait that is persuasive
to create a portrait that is personal

申请材料之中，成绩单上都是历史，就不多说了。端木花了最长时间准备的是Personal Statement，虽然不晓得究竟有没有人读（Berkeley有强调PS很重要）。言为心声：

The idea of drawing conclusions and making decisions in the face of uncertainty fascinated me. I was eager to learn more about statistics.

My path from a recent immigrant to the Secretary of XYZ Association is not straight. Dr. Jerzy Neyman once said, “Life is complicated but not uninterested.” I am eager to meet the new challenges that I know will be presented in my graduate study. I feel confident that my academic background and personality will allow me to participate fruitfully in the doctoral program at University of California, Berkeley.

端木的PS有一份通稿，再为不同学校单独写一些，为什么选择这所学校，将来想学什么，段落顺序也会做相应调整。

通稿包括：
转学经历：很感谢有机会在PS中解释自己的非传统申请背景，端木之前的打工经历也比较不常见，“it was where my love of statistics started”
研究经验：
environmental risk assessment 相关研究十个月
stochastic modeling 相关研究 March 09 - Present
summer workshop at UC Berkeley, June 09
列出自己所做的事情，和写Resume规则一样，用active verbs。根据学校调整研究方向（我承认很投机，不过确实对好几个方向都有兴趣 ：）的同时，调整这三个段落的顺序。

Conclusion：夸夸自己，表表忠心 ：P

PS也是实现整合申请资料的地方，在合适的地方提及 application package 中的其他材料。你的各项资料应该浑然一体，共同展现你是这个学校的合适人选。

以Berkeley为例，除了寻常的资料外，他家要求两篇Statement，Statement of Purpose （见附件，有阅读权限限制） & Personal History Statement，并且统计系要求一份upper-level Math courses的列表。我把PS的通稿分成两部分，调整了段落顺序，并在Personal History Statement中加了和同学们共同创建 Stat Club 的经历。
端木没有罗列自己修了什么课程，因为成绩单上有，并且还交了数学课程列表。简单提了一下，“As my transcript reveals, I have taken substantial coursework in both advanced statistics and real analysis”，强调 real analysis是因为知道他家很看中这门课，在数学课程列表中也列出了现在正在上和即将上的实分析课程（这是 one-year sequence）。强调了一下 “I am currently taking graduate level statistics courses.”
讲到自己的研究经历的时候，提到导师的名字后在括号中注明 “see letter of recommendation”，体现申请资料的整体性

PS为formal writing，不要用 I'm, didn't, gonna 之类的缩写

我用LaTeX写的PS，然后递交的PDF文件。LaTex的字体比 M$ Word 漂亮，具体见此文

端木偏好PDF或TXT文件，不会收到platform或者version的限制，不是所有人都在Windows用 Office 2007，email附件也是同理。Word文档在不同系统可能会看起来不同，美国教授们有不少在用Mac的。btw，端木收到 docx, pptx 文件的时候很是郁闷

字体：用Times最中规中矩，Serif一类的应该都可以接受
页面边距：最常用的是 上下左右各 1 in
Spacing: 好像没看到死规定。double方便阅读。有的学校会限定页数而非字数，用single就好
title一般用斜体；粗体，下划线，尽量少用；全部大写，完全不要用, BECAUSE IT LOOKS LIKE YOU ARE SHOUTING!
Optional: 名字后加上了Application ID#

端木笔记中的几点：

Feel free to acknowledge personal challenges you've faced. But focus on facts and on the future. Don't make it a tear-jerker.
Stress unique material
Show, don't tell
Market your strengths
They want a candidate whose ambitions don't end with the attainment of the degree, but include a career afterward that has some relationship to the degree earned
... look for the person's sense of what our program is all about why it makes sense in terms of his/her career plan.
Two common mistakes: wrong names; talking about something they know nothing about
impress them with your commitment and sense of dedication
The statement should be more future-oriented than past-oriented.
The most common personal statement blunder is to write an expository resume of your background and experience.
Strive for depth, not breath.

You must try to distinguish your essay from all the others by digging a bit deeper - discuss how a specific experience contribute to your values, outlook, ambitions, and concerns. In other words, rather than just recounting an experience, evaluate it in terms of who you are as a person right now.
Do not discuss the school's rank or prestige. Talk about the school itself, not about what someone else has reported about the school.
Avoid vague generalizations about the school.

其实我对PS中的那段研究经历更感兴趣，学数学的人研究生物学过程往往会有新颖有趣的见解。我不明白hematopoiesis是一个stochastic process吗？而且你提到的模拟软件可以模拟多个不同基因的表达对hematopoietic stem cell的影响吗？还是这个软件只考虑细胞外部的物理化学条件？
