We have made our first round of admission offers and are preparing to make the second round in late April/early May. Your application to our program remains under consideration.
I'd like to thank you for your patience during the application process; this can be a long and sometimes annoying wait! As noted on our web site, our program does not offer admission to graduate students unless funding in the form of a Graduate Research Associate position (GRA) is available for each admitted student. We do not feel it is in the student's best interest to pursue academic studies and at the same time be burdened by financial concerns.
Unfortunately, this policy leads to a time consuming process which does not provide our applicants with a quick decision on their application. The funds for GRA positions come from research grants secured by our faculty. Applying for such grants is an ongoing process that occurs throughout the year and can involve a significant amount of time between proposal submission and receipt of funds.
The number of GRA positions limits the number of applicants admitted to our program for a given quarter. Our Graduate Studies Committee must make admission decisions three to six months prior to a given quarter based solely on an estimated number of openings. So that we do not 'over admit,' the GSC must wait until there is a reasonable degree of certainty that a grant proposal will be funded. Thus a good deal of time--two to six months--may pass between your submission of application materials and a final decision regarding admission. . 1point3acres
At this time we estimate roughly 20-30 GRA positions will be available for the Summer-Autumn 2012 time frame. Our first round of offers was made to roughly 35 applicants. We anticipate roughly half will accept, therefore we will make a second round of offers in late April/early May then wait to hear back from those applicants with their decisions. If needed, we'll then make another round of offers a few weeks later and wait for these decisions, then make another round of offers and wait, and so on until we fill our estimated GRA needs. Thus a final decision on your application may not come for some time.
Note that we do not rank our applicants. In other words, we do not assign a numerical ranking to our applicants and with each round of offers simply make offers to the next "X" number applicants. Instead, we re-evaluate our pool with each new round of offers. When a final decision has been made on your application our program will contact you at this email address. However, if I may answer any further questions, please feel free to contact me.. From 1point 3acres bbs
