我导师给我的回信--How to write a critics

最近闲的无聊，于是给那边老师写信要给点建议。老师让开始读他们组的paper，并写个one-paper的critics。

遂激动之，半天读完文章，半天写好一个summary, 最后写了点limitation。。
没想到教授给我的回信比我写的还长，汗一个~~
废话少说，我把它分享给大家，一方面也许对研究有帮助，另一方面可能对陶瓷也有指导吧，呵呵。。
Dear superwang,

It's a good summary, with too many nice words.
What I expect is critical review.

But critical review is more than a summary of the paper.
You will need to develop real understanding of the material, and evaluate, and offer critical comment on the ideas and information that the author(s) presents in the article.

We will need to identify:
   -- the research question (usually stated in the Abstract and Introduction)
   -- the hypothesis(es) (usually in the Introduction)
   -- the test of the hypothesis (in the Methods)
   -- the findings (in the Results, including tables and figures)
   -- how the findings were interpreted (in the Discussion)

You may start with tese questions:
   -- What is interesting about this information?
   -- How does the author(s) support the hypothesis?
   -- What is the main aim of the article?
   -- Is the article timely?
   -- Is the argument / thesis convincing? Is the evidence valid?
   -- How does the study design address the thesis?
   -- What are the controls for each experiment?
   -- Is the methodology appropriate? Any weaknesses?
   -- Are the results convincing? Is it comprehensive and through?
   -- What questions remain unanswered? Anything omitted?
   -- Are the findings presented and described clearly and fully?
   -- Could the data be interpreted in another way?
   -- How does the article contribute to the field? Does it make an original contribution to the field?

Although the papers you're evaluating are from my group, I'd like to hear more critics and constructive comments. You may give yourself a little bit more time to consume the material before you revise your review.

顶！受益匪浅~这就是critical thinking吧，做博士的基础~

很有价值的建议，尤其对于中国学生。感觉老师给的建议中多数问题是关于研究设计和论文整体的cohesion的，只有个别问题是关于研究本身的价值和结论的正确性（似乎不该用这个词）的。我个人认为评价后者更困难些。

不过说实话，依我现在的水平，最多就是读懂他们的文章，最多能指出点limitation和建议。
但想通过读懂文章来真正了解他们的工作，尤其是按照老师说的高屋建瓴似的理解，真的挺有难度的。

一开始能读懂已经很不错了 那些limitation啊一般开始看出来的都是小trick
最好还是能对整个领域有一个基本的了解 精读一些引用率高的 经典的文章 略读一些近年的文章 结合各年会议啊期刊啊其中的一些talk,workshop等 知道这个领域以前是怎么发展起来的 现在做到哪一步了 未来的热点是什么
然后结合一些批判型，改进型文章了解它们的思路，学习一下critical thinking

多谢brevity啦。。。很有启发性。。

问题是我现在最我的领域不是特别的熟悉，cloud computing实际也是比较大的方向了，我现在看的一块也就是解决云计算的虚拟化问题。
而他们实验室的这块研究更加小，就是用reinforcement learning方法解决虚拟机的资源配置问题。。。
RL的方法倒不新，关键是他是第一个把RL移植到虚拟机的资源管理上来的。。。

恩，受教了。critical thinking 很有用

读大量的paper并且弄懂也是一个积累的过程

读懂Paper和真正能critics的看待他们的工作是两码事啊。。我现在觉得与其读N遍一篇paper倒不如看看后面的reference。。idea得慢慢积累啊。。
