鄙校商学院om系教授关于phd申请的建议

坐标北美，发邮件给商学院om系的教授套瓷，虽然没得到正面回复，但是得到了一些很有用的申请建议。这位老师还是很nice的。信息并不涉及隐私或者机密，贴出来和大家分享。

Given that you are competing for an offer of admission with 15-30 other people, it is very important that your application present as strong a case as possible. Some advice:

1)      You have a choice of taking GRE or GMAT, but you must take one – this requirement cannot be waived.  Many students find GRE somewhat easier. Only the general test is required. However, if you have taken the subject tests before and have done well, please include these as well – it will strengthen your application. For a foreign student, we do not expect very high scores on the English part (however, we do expect strong English communication skills).  On the other hand, most of the successful applicants who have been offered admission in the last few years have perfect or near-perfect quantitative scores.   If you have only an unofficial score report, please submit a copy with your application, while requesting that an official report be sent directly to Rotman.  The same goes for you University transcripts – if you do not have an official copy, please send in an unofficial one so that we can start processing your application.  In the meantime, please request an official copy – it will be necessary should you get an offer of admission (all official documents will be needed before a final offer can be issued).

2)      A TOEFL/TWE is not necessary if your last degree was from an English-based program

3)      Letters of reference are a very important component of the evaluation process.  You are free to obtain a letter from anyone you want, but some letters are more useful than others. A useful letter is the one that assesses your ability to do academic research.  Such letters normally come from your former professors or thesis supervisors. It is particularly helpful when the person writing the letter has a strong track record in research.  However, a letter from a famous person who does not know you very well is not too useful – superficial letters do not add much to your file.  Letters assessing your other skills (e.g., ability to be an effective manager in an industrial setting) are less useful.  Thus, letters from co-workers or supervisors in your place of work are usually not very suitable.

. 4)      Our program requires high level of mathematical skills, thus we scrutinize you preparation in mathematics very closely. You may want to highlight any advanced courses you have taken in this area, particularly courses focusing on abstract ideas and mathematical thinking (theorems/proofs).

5)      Any evidence of prior research, particularly research relevant to OM is valuable and should be included.

ustcer? 我认识的国内本科直接过来的只有一个清华的哥们，其他的都是海本或者国外的硕士。gpa就不知道了。。。

数学的话应该是90percentile以上算优秀
