Openings Available at Ning Lab, OSU

The Ning Lab (u dot osu dot edu/ning dot 104) at the Biomedical Informatics (BMI) Department and the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) Department, the Ohio State University, provides unique opportunities and environment for the development of cutting-edge computational methods and the application of such methods in high-impact, real-life medical and health problems. The Ning lab is conducting research on Data Mining, Machine Learning, Big Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence with applications in drug discovery, Medical Informatics and Health Informatics. The research in the Lab is highly data-driven, computation-oriented and primarily focused on methodology development. The Lab develops new and better methods/algorithms/models to solve emerging and critical problems in healthcare and medicine domains. The new methodologies being developed in the Lab are also sufficiently generalizable to be applied to the problems from other domains (e.g., e-Commerce, social networks, system monitoring and diagnosis) that share similar characteristics as the targeted problems in healthcare and medicine domains. The typical techniques that the Lab develops include information retrieval, learning to rank, recommendation, classification, among others, and are applied to problems such as drug property prediction, compound prioritization, drug selection, pharmacovigilance data mining, electronic medical record analysis, etc. The Lab is not, unfortunately, conducting wet-lab biological research, nor focused on mechanism discovery in the biological systems.

Some quick facts about the OSU:
#16 in Top Public Schools
#30 in Computer Science
#32 in Best Medical Schools

The Lab currently (as of Aug 1, 2018) has multiple openings for graduate students (Ph.D./M.S.), postdocs and visiting scholars.

Ph.D. students
The Lab is seeking multiple Ph.D. students (with full Research Assistantship support) on Data Mining, Machine Learning, Big Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence, starting immediately (i.e., Fall 2018) until the positions are filled. Fall 2018, Spring 2019 and Fall 2019 admissions will all be acceptable. The students will help develop novel computational techniques for problems in drug development, bioinformatics, medical informatics and health informatics, including, but not limited to, drug property prediction, pharmacovigilance data mining, electronic medical record analysis.

Ideal candidates should be self-motivated and determined. They are expected to have a strong background in Math, statistics, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering or Automation. Extensive programming experience in either C/C++, MATLAB or Python is preferred. Basic knowledge and experience in Data Mining and Machine Learning is also preferred.

Ph.D. students will be recruited through the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) Department(i.e., upon graduation, they will be granted CSE degrees). Thus, they need to apply through CSE and satisfy the CSE admission requirements. If the students are interested in Spring 2019 or Fall 2019 admission, please contact Dr. Ning (ning.104@osu.edu) with the updated CV and transcripts. If the students are already enrolled in the OSU CSE programs, please feel free to schedule a meeting with Dr. Ning on campus.

Postdocs
The Lab is seeking multiple postdocs, starting immediately (i.e., Fall 2018) until the positions are filled. The postdoc candidates are expected to have a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science or related disciplines (e.g., Electrical Engineering, Statistics, Automation), conduct independent research in Data Mining, Machine Learning, Big Data Analytics or Artificial Intelligence (e.g., doing research on sparse learning, metric learning, kernel methods, learning to rank, recommender systems, graph mining, point processes, deep learning) and have strong communication skills and leadership. The postdoc candidates are also expected to be highly self-motivated and have had a clear career goal set in mind. The postdocs will assist PI Ning on the methodology development in the current projects.

Compensation and benefits will be very competitive. If interested, please contact Dr. Ning (ning.104@osu.edu) with the updated CV, transcripts (both undergrad and graduate) and 3 representative publications.

M.S. and undergrad students
The Lab is providing hourly-paid positions for M.S. students and undergraduate students and will provide full Research Assistantshipfor outstanding M.S. students doing theses. The students are expected to have sufficient programming skills in python, matlab or C/C++, proficiency in at least one script language (e.g., perl, tcsh) and good communication skills. The students are also expected to have reasonable background in Math (linear algebra), statistics or machine learning. The Lab is also hiring M.S. students with a valid OPT status as research staff. Please contact Dr. Ning (ning.104@osu.edu) with the updated CV and transcripts (both undergrad and graduate, if applies) if interested.

Visiting Scholars
The Lab is always having positions for visiting students and visiting scholars and will provide necessary financial support. Please contact Dr. Ning (ning.104@osu.edu) with the updated CV, transcripts (both undergraduate and graduate) and 3 representative publications, if interested.
