Prof. Zhe Jiang’s spatial data science research lab in the CS
department of the Univ. of Alabama is looking for Ph.D.
students working in the exciting area of data science. The
lab mission is to conduct interdisciplinary data science
research that not only advances computer science but also
has significant real-world applications. The lab particularly
focuses on mining spatial and spatiotemporal data, such as
GPS trajectories, earth observation imagery, geo-social media,
etc. Applications include earth science, transportation, disaster
management, public safety, etc. Works have been published
in the top data mining conferences and journals such as ACM
International Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data
Mining (SIGKDD), IEEE International Conference on Data Mining
(ICDM), IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering
(TKDE), IEEE Transactions on Big Data (TBD).
The team particularly welcome applicants with the following
qualities:
• Strong interest in data mining, self-motivated
• Strong CS and math/statistics background
• Good presentation skills

The University of Alabama (UA) is the flagship university in the
state of Alabama. UA has experienced rapid growth in research
in recent years. It is classified as “R1: Doctoral Universities –
Very High Research Activity” in the Carnegie Classification of
Institutions of Higher Education, based on research funding,
research staff and the number of doctoral graduates. It is located
at the city of Tuscaloosa, within around three or four hours drive to
major cities such as Atlanta, New Orleans, Pensacola Beach, etc.
