【GWU】分享GWU sta/biosta master项目的情况，来自该校统计系phd

攒个人品，分享给拿了这家ad/offer的同学。很多人都在问找工作是否容易等情况。下面是一个在GWU念统计phd的relationship(表姐的朋友)给我回复的邮件，希望能多少解决一些同学的疑惑，为大家选择是否接受他家的录取给一定帮助。ps:这里新人潜水党一名，权限很低，还望大家多多包涵和支持哈

我的问题1. I've heard that GWU is a very expensive university, and DC is a very expensive city as well, could you please tell me how much the annual total expense of a (statistics) student , including tuition and housing cost as well as the other parts of the living cost, will be? Is that sensible to rent an apartment somewhere in Virginia or Maryland in order to save some money in housing?

reply1.     GWU, as an old private university in downtown Washington DC, the tuition is pretty high. The expenditure of each  credit from different programs in different levels varies, too. Some popular and strong programs cost more for sure, such as medical, law, public health, statistics and finance etc. So far, I know each credit of STATS graduate program cost around $1300, pretty fair and normal for STATS program in private school. Living in DC is expensive, too. Here are two ways I will say pretty reaonable. 1, Rent an apt. from campus, it cost around $1100 with all utilities every month and it is a walk distance from campus; It is fair as saving time and the metro every month may cost you around $200 I guess; 2, Rent an apt with some friends in VA (eiher Arlington or Alexandria), they are not cheap, either. So far, I know the studio without internet in Pentagon city is around 1400, but some Chinese share the studio~ Though I don't like sharing bedroom, but that's an option~ Please never think about east DC and MD, there is much higher crime rate there! Actually one more option, you can think about Fairfax in VA, which is close to GMU, it's farther but cheaper~ Btw, one thing you may appreciate in DC is you don't need to purchase a car, metro brings you anywhere and it is convenient for sure. In case, you need some help, your friends, including me, always can help you out as I am not going to sell mine, lol~



我的问题2. Whether it's true that international students without citizenship can hardly find job, even internship in DC ? Do you know the Chinese students' condition  after graduation? Whether do they manage to find jobs in US, or continue to take a PhD program in GWU or in other universities, or, return China?

reply2.     I think it is not true. As a metropolitan city, there are definitely more chance to find a job in DC. A lot of intern opportunies carry on in the department of statistics. Different people have different choices when they finish their master degree. I cannot tell what is the majority option as we have more than 160 masters, but as I know, most Chinese master students prefer to persue their study or go back to China. It depends on your own career plan, but also determinence I think



我的问题3.I read in the online forum that the statistics MS program in GWU is not well-designed that it make students to fail, besides, the professors are mean, Do you know the MS students study effect? Is it true that many students in MS program are not able to get their degree successfully ?

reply3.    I bet that's a rumor to throw some bad influences of the professors in STATS program. You know, some professors here are really well-known, such as  Mahmoud, Singpurwalla, Balaji and so on. Though that's my first year here, I think they are super nice when we are talking and I am taking some of their classes, too. Though I have heard they failed students, but not to hard-work students~ Their lectures are well prepared and some of them have some accents, but I don't think that's a big deal. I don't understand what you mean about study effect~ But so far, I believe Chinese are totally in their classes, at least, those in master degree I know are very smart and do really well. I am pretty sure if you work hard, even not that hard, at least, finish your homework by your own on time, and take notes and focus on the lectures, it is not that hard to get at least A_ or B+ in the classes, A is possible, too. Another example I can share, I heard last semester, Prof. Mahmoud gave 13 A's to 15 students, and 1 B and 1 F, 10 of A's are Chinese and the F guy is a Chinese, too. You are smart and I think you know what I want to say~

Our program is not top in stats in the states, but not bad! That's a good option, even just backup plan, I think, since I know we will admit more graduate students next year

确实挺多的 但是他家faculty也很多，所以只能说是个挺大的系吧。毕竟专排只有48，肯定不能和顶尖的比

啊啊啊咱主要是也去不了顶尖的了。。。要是没别的地方要估计只能去打打酱油来
