New York City District attorneys decided not to prosecute more than 500 cases since March 12 when the Mayor declared a state of emergency. Such practice is very common in Brooklyn, where District Attorney Eric Gonzalez decided not to prosecute 391 arrests for nonviolent misdemeanor charges and deferred prosecution for 65 cases of more serious charges. NYPD officials said there were individuals charged with felony burglaries of businesses in Brooklyn had their cases deferred and then were arrested again on similar charges. Mr. Gonzalez said they made such decisions, to limit the spread of the coronavirus in city jails, and also because of freezes placed on some New York state criminal court operations, such as the assembly of grand juries. source
