shared insights abt uc davis stats dept

最近版上有人想了解uc davis stat department。 问了个在那里呆过的朋友，算是share information。
问题是我随便想随便问的，由于此童鞋不会说中文，并且joyce比较懒，不想翻译。所以就直接贴一下往来的email。大家凑合着看，如果有进一步的问题我可以再转问下。

  This is Joyce and I have a friend who is interested in applying for stat grad program in UC DAVIS. Do you have any insights that you can provide as an insider?
  Questions like what is the dept like, big or small in terms of incoming class size each year? is it more strong in theory or applied stuff? pros and cons? do they have any strong preferences for people with a certain background (like cs?) do they have lots of asians/chinese/internationals?
Any comments will be appreciated. Feel free to provide biased opinions :P

Hi Joyce,
The department is fairly small. There's 19 full time professors. Their program is similar to here. There is a one-year sequence of Mathematical Statistics, one of Applied Statistics but they do not require a probability sequence. This probably means that they supplement it or expect you to have SOME of it already. They DO however have a Pre-quals written examination that probably covers the Math.stat and the applied stats courses. So I guess I would say that they don't have such a strong emphasis on theory as in Berkeley, but she should definitely be familiar with it. I'm not sure what their incoming students are like, but from my TAs there are a large amount of international students.

They have a large amount of research interests, definitely something for most people. Although there is only one prof. who does a large amount of Statistical computing. And as they say, you don't want to go to a university for ONE professor. So if she wants to do that, I don't know that Davis is right, maybe CMU would be a better choice. Let me know if i missed anything or if new questions come to mind while reading this. And YES, I love my old school still! :P

他这里说的两种sequence 是phd 进去之后必修的course work。 一般phd 还是要先上一两年课，后面三年比较大量地research work。

今天稍微问了下，据说uc davis 的biostat 很好，虽然他们的biostat 是group 而不是department。但据说funding比整个stat dept 还要多，主要还是做genetics。两个dept admission是分开的，但好像不能同时两个都申请。 ...

我有学长在那，他们Biostat的PHD四年就能拿到。我那学长又是少年班的，也就是说他24就能拿到PHD。我还比他大一岁呢。。。。。。。。
