Ph.D. openings at Drexel MSE

Dr. Yong-Jie Hu’s research group in the department of materials science and engineering at Drexel University is looking for motivated Ph.D. students starting in January 2021 or September 2021. The successful candidates will receive research assistantships with full financial support. We encourage applications from highly self-motivated students with a keen interest in applying state-of-art materials simulation tools and data-science techniques to advance the design of new materials. Successful candidates should have a solid education/research background in materials science and engineering, physics, mechanics, or other related fields. Experience in computational materials modeling or code programming is preferred but not required. The research area and interests of Dr. Hu’s group lie in employing computational materials modeling and simulation methods, primarily first-principles calculations, molecular dynamic/static simulations and CALPHAD modeling, as well as data-science/statistical algorithms to rationalize the design of advanced materials by investigating the critical mechanical, thermodynamic and electronic properties.

Successful candidates will conduct research in one or more of the following areas:

• Deformation mechanisms and strength-ductile synergy in emerging alloys

• Structures, thermodynamics and phase transitions of crystalline defects

• Quantitative models and databases for novel materials synthesis and processing

• Design and discovery of oxide polymorphs and heterostructures for functional applications
