另外附上我问到的一些情况,供大家参考一下,特别感谢提供信息的学长!
I would say, about 1/4 - 1/3 of the student applied for PhD program and 1/2 of them found jobs around VA and DC areas. This is just an estimate from what I observed in 2012 and 2013.

It is a choice that you should make after the first semester whether you want to go for a PhD degree or find a job. Because your choice will determine what you should focus on in the following time in UVa. Also, if you know what you want to do already, you should also take that into concern when making decision of what program to attend. Some programs prepare you for a PhD and some are better for finding jobs. If you want to find a job after getting a master, location is also a very important factor.
Like stat departments in many universities, UVa stat is not very large in terms of size. It has about 8-9 faculties. Two of them are Chinese and they are very nice. Don't worry about the teaching style, all statistics are taught the same way, no matter in China or in US.
I will start from 2011. In 2011, about 15 masters were admitted to UVa stat program. Half of them are Chinese from universities in China. They graduate in 2013, and I know about 5 of them got job offers. Mostly working with data management.
The graduate adviser wanted to reform the program beginning in 2013. Therefore, the master program didn't recruit as many students in 2012. It only admitted about 7 student in 2012, most of them were from UVa undergraduate. Because the graduate adviser (Dan Spitzner) intended to have these student graduate in one year, in 2013 with those who were admitted in 2011. I am one of them. And I am the only one who continued to a PhD program. Other people got jobs in DC, VA, or Hong Kong. |
