人生岔路口之Trader转quant/码 美研cs还是sell-side quant？

BG: 港三数学本硕，2yr+ 投行 flow trading 经验，觉得传统voice trading：

1. Too relationship-based不适合我这种introvert
2.迟早药丸， at least semi-automated
3.在hk呆的要抑郁症了no joke, 今年之内一定要run出去, 这破地方太浪费青春了
4.大多数trading desks都toxic af，最后升MD的往往不是pnl最好的/最聪明的而是最会玩politics的， I definitely don't see myself become an MD in a bank as a flow trader.

于是乎裸辞转码伸美研cs，顺便找找quant工作，运气挺好的现在两边都有还不错的结果，拿到了duke mscs offer跟一家美资行的desk quant, 很纠结应该怎么选.

For tech:  
这几个月泡在地里看帖子觉得如果转tech最感兴趣的role是MLE/DS - 因为对数学/统计感兴趣，修的课多+学起来轻松, 但是知道MLE的hc比SDE少得多得多，而且有好多stats phd的大大们在卷可能真的没我事儿了. 硬转码的话可能最后还是会去当SDE吧。

For quant:
因为个人之前面过Baly类似于systematic macro的role（面了七八轮，都跟HR谈pay了最后给我来一句“sorry we decided not to hire in Asia this year”把我给气的). Yet the job scope sounds like sth I'm very interested in, so my ultimate career goal is still buy-side QR/quant trader, 不打算回国，想进
Two sigma/Point72/Citadel/SIG/millennium/
JS/HRT/DRW/Jump/Optiver 这个tier的公司，做选择的主要考虑是whichever path makes it more possible to break in.

I'm quite new to both quant/tech-related roles. 以下是我自己的一些判断, correct me if I'm wrong. 求地里的码农大大跟quant大大们给一点意见.  感恩！！！

Duke MSCS

+ 可转码 进入tech industry 现在这么想做buy-side qr可能是不知道tech多香吧lol.
+ title！ 个人比较看重学校对individual的profile加成 duke真的抬举我了啊哈哈
+ 美国不管是quant 还是tech 市场容量都比亚洲大得多
+ 留学体验 去rice交换那几个月可太快乐了 再也没有这么开心过了 虽然可能不会去了但还是大声喊一句Rice I love u！

-可能卷不过科班选手 毕业进不了大厂
-对自己的编程能力其实没啥信心 本科修cs的课成绩一般，对coding是感兴趣的但是深知自己不是天才型选手，只是靠着当年高考做题家的思维逻辑一路走过来，不知道冲去读cs会不会把competition想的太简单了
-没有historical employment data for buy-side QR, 不知道去hf的可行性
-浪费了前面几年的experience if I start all over again as an SDE, 那些作为trading floor底层生物受的气啊FML：）


美资行 desk quant

+ 个人对市场感兴趣 ultimately还是想做quant trading 是比较low-risk的一条路
+ Relevant experience for niche role, 进入的team是一个US/UK 大行已经开始automated market making的asset class但是asia还比较慢, 大家都是刚开始. 未来几年upside是有的.
+ 应该短期内会relocate我去sg，还是可以run出香港! 在sg也有关系很好的朋友，不会觉得寂寞
+ 考虑到目前asian hate crimes in the US， it's a safer choice.


-我的整个team都在伦敦. I'm hired for Asia coverage. team里的人都很好很愿意教但我不知道这个mode会不会让我成长比较慢
-目前Pay其实一般（given I already had 2yr+ experience）。Base跟google fresh grad sde 差不多吧不过sg的税比较低. Altho这个问题不大，还是比较在意在自己profile基础上之后的upside
-If I opt for this it means that I won't be having a legit CS degree. 感觉编程能力已经是现在做quant的重中之重了我也真的需要more training. 如果最后下定决心选了这个可能会学个online cs degree吧。

卖方好像基本上都要automatic了吧

Why not apply for a more quant related master like financial engineering, financial math, applied math etc. if u want to do quant at the end?

From my knowledge it's a bit hard to break into quant directly with CS master, so some related experiences would be helpful.

What about doing quant for some time first, see if u can relocate to the US office, or then apply for quant related master to go to the US? (if u still care about going to the US)

I already had one master in financial mathematics just not in the states 😂. In terms of skillset, I applied basically all cs programs because that’s the field I need more training in. But I get your point tho! Relevant experience does matter. Relocation sounds like a plan but I dunno how difficult it is within the bank. Anw, thanks for the input! I will take a step back and think it through:)

如果楼主不想浪费之前的工作经验，我觉得可以选择desk quant职位，然后边工作边读一个online CS master，比如gatech的omscs

你目标的这些公司………duke mscs中国人可能都没人进
