2022 Fall Ph.D. Opportunity in Transportation
Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering
The Wayne State University


Position Description
The Transportation Research Lab at Wayne State University (WSU), led by Dr. Xiaodong Qian, invites applications for one to two Ph.D. student positions in areas of transportation equity, emerging mobility, pedestrian & cyclist safety, and transportation resilience. Prospective students must have a bachelor's or master's degree in engineering or related fields, such as Transportation Engineering. Preferred skills/experiences include spatial analysis, transportation simulation, data-driven modeling, and computer programming (Python, R, C, etc.). The expected start time is Fall 2022 (classes start on September 1st, 2022) and may extend into Spring 2023. Successful applicants will receive full tuition support and stipends (including summer) for the duration of their studies. If you are interested in applying, please send your cover letter, CV, and transcript (including GRE/TOEFL scores if available) to Dr. Qian at qian200@purdue.edu with the subject line "Prospective Graduate Student: {Your Name}".

About the Wayne State University
WSU is a public research university in Detroit, Michigan. Founded in 1868, Wayne State consists of 13 schools and colleges offering approximately 350 programs to nearly 25,000 graduate and undergraduate students. Wayne State University, along with the University of Michigan and Michigan State University, compose the University Research Corridor of Michigan. In addition, Wayne State is classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity".

About Dr. Xiaodong Qian
Dr. Qian will join WSU as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, starting Fall 2022. His research focuses on the intersection of transportation equity, emerging mobilities, transportation safety and health, and disaster management. Prior to joining WSU, he works as a postdoctoral associate in the Lyles School of Civil Engineering at Purdue University and in the Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Davis (UC Davis). He received his bachelor's degree in Civil  Engineering and Economics & Management from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, and his Ph.D. degree in Transportation Engineering at UC Davis in 2019. He has been a Principal Investigator (PI) for three projects funded by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans). His research has been published in leading journals such as Transportation Research Part A & D and Transport Geography.
