Ph.D. Assistantship in Fall 2023

Two fully funded Ph.D. student positions at the department of Computer Science, starting from Fall 2023, are available in Prof. Alvaro Velasquez’s group at the University of Colorado Boulder. We have a very strong Computer Science graduate program, which ranks #38 in the United States according to U.S. News 2022. The research focus in Prof. Velasquez’s group is at the intersection of data-driven machine learning and symbolic reasoning toward the development of neuro-symbolic artificial intelligence. Self-motivated students with a strong background in machine learning, mathematics, and statistics are encouraged to apply. What you can expect in our group?
In our group, we conduct research in the emerging intersection of machine learning and symbolic artificial intelligence as well as the development of novel sequential decision-making solutions in the fields of reinforcement learning and planning. These areas have witnessed tremendous growth in the past decade, with notable examples including the defeat of the world Go champion. The students may expect a high research throughput with effective teamwork via an extensive network of collaborators from various universities.

Alvaro Velasquez is an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Colorado Boulder. Before that, Alvaro oversaw the machine intelligence portfolio of investments for the Information Directorate of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). Alvaro received his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Central Florida and is a recipient of the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP) award, the University of Central Florida 30 Under 30 award, and best paper and patent awards from AFRL. He serves as Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Artificial Intelligence and his research has been funded by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research.
