The research of our lab aims at the novel design and operation of smart manufacturing systems with an emphasis on human-machine collaboration, digitalization, self-cognition, self-configuration, and self-optimization methodology. In particular, the research of our lab is shaped by the emerging trend toward cognitive, sustainable, reconfigurable, and human-centric automation in manufacturing systems. Current research focuses on maximally leveraging intelligent power from advanced manufacturing assets, i.e., sensors, robotics, machines, and vehicles, to continue the trend of improving the efficiency and practicality of smart manufacturing techniques in the presence of planetary boundaries, mass personalization, and societal goals. Our goal is to make the robots and machines less demanding in data collection and storage, more creative and responsive with human expertise and product variants, and easier to be accessed by small and medium enterprises and businesses. Such an approach will create a flexible and reconfigurable solution that provides training and assistance to workers on the shop floors to mitigate human errors and improve human skills during day-by-day operations.
We now have openings for two fully funded Ph.D./M.S. students (starting from Spring or Fall 2023) and one opening for a fully funded postdoctoral scholar (starting from Spring 2023). We also welcome research interns (remote or in-person) anytime. The prospective students will develop digital twin, machine learning, control, and optimization tool for machines and industrial robots, such as deep prognostic/diagnostics, process/configuration planning, multi-agent system, human-machine interaction and collaboration. The ideal candidate should have a strong interest in smart manufacturing, human-machine teaming, and autonomous systems, as well as a solid background in math, be comfortable in python/MATLAB programming and be willing to work with hardware. A Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, manufacturing/industrial engineering, or related engineering areas in robotics is preferred but not required.
