Dr. Yi He is an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science at Old Dominion University (ODU). He is looking for self-motivated PhD and Master students, who are interested in Data Mining and Machine Learning, to join his lab, starting from Fall 2023.
PhD students will be fully supported as a graduate teaching assistant (TA) or research assistant (RA), with a tuition waiver + $2000 monthly stipend; MS students will be supported as RA with a tuition waiver.
P.S.: Norfolk is a city with cheap life expenses, where you can expect an enjoyable life with such a stipend.
About Dr. Yi He:
His research interests lie broadly in AI, ML, and DM and specifically in data streams, online learning, real-time decision-making, and explainable/equitable AI. Dr. He's lab has consistent publications at top-tier DM and AI venues, including AAAI, IJCAI, WWW, ICDM, TKDE, TNNLS, TII, ACMMM, to name a few. Please find the specifics on his personal webpage https://www.lions.odu.edu/~y1he/research.html.
About ODU:
Old Dominion University is founded in 1930 by the College of William and Mary, known as a "public Ivy", the second oldest university in the United States. The computer science department of ODU holds a rank of 106 (tying with CUNY) by the CS rankings in the AI&IR area: https://csrankings.org/#/fromyea ... amp;inforet&us.
ODU is classified as "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity" by the Carnegie Classification as of the 2021 update: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Li ... _the_United_States. Only 146 institutions across the US in total hold the R1 classification.
ODU locates in the city of Norfolk, which let students enjoy convenient transportation through the so-called DMV district (District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia) -- to wit, 4 hours driving to Washington DC and 6 hours to New York City. ODU arranges a peaceful research life, which has spurred a very strong computer science program with numerous IEEE Fellows, National Science Foundation CAREER Award winners, ONR Young Investigator Awardees, top conference chairs, most highly cited researchers in the world of science, and many others. Students who graduated from our program joined Cisco, Epic, IBM Research, Google Research, AT&T Labs, Amazon, etc., and joined research schools such as Drexel University and Temple University.
Expectations and Requirements:
- Meet the minimum admission requirements of ODU (TOEFL IBT 79/IELTS 6.5 and GRE 150 + 150, for more details, please go to the application checklist https://www.odu.edu/admission/in ... rnational-checklist). Note, GRE is NOT a must, if prior research experience could be demonstrated.
- Having one of the following three preliminaries is preferred: 1) being familiar with one programming language (python/JAVA/C/Matlab); 2) with solid math background; 3) having prior research experience.
- Background in all science and engineering fields is welcomed, including but not limited to, computer science/engineering, math, statistics, finance, physics, chemistry, biology, to name a few. As long as you are eager to research DM & ML and are excited to conduct good science, we can talk.
