The definingmoment in my life came six years ago when I touched into the world of Olympiadin Informatics. I became fascinated with the art of algorithm immediately andworked hard at it. After a period of time, I won the first prize in BeijingHigh School Programming Contest. However, that was not enough for me causethere were so many magical algorithms waiting for me to explore and I wanted tograsp them all. So when I went to the university, I chose computer science asmy major because I found this was the subject that I was really interested in.I continued to solve the problems of the Online Judge System to practice my skills. At that time, computingjust become a part of my life. I mastered many interesting algorithms such assegment tree, network flow and so on. Of course, it was not a smoothness. Forexample, some difficult problems can puzzle me for several days. However, Ididn’t give it up. I searched for the solution on the net or asked others forhelp. I tried my best to figure it out in the end and when it came, I felt verysatisfied – maybe I was born to be a coder. During my college, I attended inACM-ICPC Regional for six times and the last time – just a month ago – I wonthe gold medal in Nanjing with the team ranked 12th. When I heard the result, Iwas so pleased even with tears in my eyes. It's not only proving my ability buttelling me one’s efforts will pay off. I hope to go further on this way.

My ambition and programming ability enabled meto get a position in Prof. Cao’s laboratory of Intelligent InformationProcessing, which belonged to Institute of Computing Technology Chinese Academyof Science. My research was mainly focused on intelligent medical. I finishedtwo papers here named “A Preliminary Data Analysis of Stroke Prescriptions” and“Intelligent Online Clinic Alert System and its Application in TCM”. The formerone’s main idea is using methods of data mining to investigate the relationshipbetween compatibilities of prescriptions for treating stroke and theirattributions such as dynasties and resources, which used to provide a decisionsupport for clinical applications. The latter one proposes an IntelligentOnline Clinic Alert System which is applied on Traditional Chinese ClinicalMedicine. By collecting the data of herbs, prescriptions, symptoms anddiagnoses, the system builds a strong dictionary and achieves intelligentonline analysis by scales and rules. Here, I have to say I have never thoughtthe process of research is so arduous. For instance, I had to do numerous ofexperiments to verify my surmises and I need to change my plan if I foundsomething is wrong. During the period I became realized that research not onlyrequires brilliant ideas but also the attitudes of patience and persistence.Moreover, these studies are meaningful cause they help to solve the practicalproblems. I feel happy when my works can contribute to the development ofscience and thus make the society better. Now I am working on AutomaticAcquisition of Clinical Terms, another challenging issue involved naturallanguage processing. It seems I will enjoy it for a period of time.. 鍥磋?鎴戜滑@1point 3 acres

As for my graduate study, I would like to workin Artificial Intelligence, especially in knowledge representation, data miningor machine learning. There are two reasons. The first reason is that I believeArtificial Intelligence has a broad prospect. It will make a qualitative leapin the human work efficiency and bring a revolutionary storm in informatics.For example, my research will make doctors’ work easily and hence an improvingof efficiency. It’s always meaningful. However, this direction is verydifficult and there are so many issues waiting for the researchers. So I hopeto contribute my own power to Artificial Intelligence research. The secondreason is I find myself fit the study very well. First, I am interested in thisarea. Second, I have a strong basic knowledge of general algorithm and I havedone one year internship in this direction. Moreover, I have read manymonographs in this area, from Neural Networks to Knowledge Discovery. Third, Ihave the qualities to be successful in this field: creativeness,collaborativeness and persistence. Due to these reasons I’m sure I will do thejob well..1point3acres缃�

The Master program of your department ownshigh-quality courses and excellent faculty that can satisfy my need ofimproving specialized skills and mastering the most advanced techniquesworld-wide. Purpose of Study & Professional Plans            The boundless possibility of trying out and the instant knowledge of theoutcome that stimulates one for further analysis of a rationale in question, is what I find most appealing aboutComputer Science. Keeping up an inquisitive and explorative attitude, Ibelieve, leads to a constant learning process. This approach adds to thealready immense potential for innovation that exists in this field.           As a student in the final year of undergraduate study for a Bachelor ofEngineering degree in Computer Science & Engineering, I look to graduatestudy to refine my knowledge and skills in my areas of interest. I believe itwill also serve to give direction to my goal of a career as a researchprofessional at an academic or commercial, research-oriented organisation. Iintend to pursue an MS degree in order to reach that goal.Academic Background & Research Interests           In my undergraduate studies, I have benefited from the breadth of Shivaji University’s syllabi content that hasgiven me a comprehensive exposure to the core areas of Computer Science and astrong conceptual understanding of the same. In these three and half years ofstudy, I have strived to maintain an approach of expending independent effortin all my endeavors. Learning by myself and sharing my knowledge with othershas been most worthwhile, when comprehending a concept.            Over the past two years, I have developed an interest in the areas of CompilerConstruction and Information Retrieval. The Compiler Construction lab sessionslast semester required the design of a compiler for C++ programs that wererestricted to For loops, Switch case statements and simple input and output.The work involved in this, as well as the courses, Formal Systems and Automata and CompilerConstruction, have lead me to appreciate theintricacies involved in this field. However, for my MS degree, I remain open to othertopics as well.           For my B.E project, I have decided to concentrate on my other area of interestviz. Information Retrieval. I’m attempting to evolve a technique that, whenemployed in a search engine, will maximize the comprehensiveness and precisionof the query listings. The ongoing work has introduced me to a vast body ofpertinent research, such as the University of Washington’s Dynamic Reference Sifting technique for locating an individual’shomepage, among others. This has served to sharpen my inclination to engage inactive research within this area.(Please seeattached Resume’ for the Academic and Co-curricular distinctions)           One person’slife influences the lives of an unbelievable number of people, one of the most important lessons I learned,being the Head of the Apex Body at senior secondary level (11th and 12thstandard). Hence the need of responsible actions. Becoming the youngest Head ofthe Apex Body ever and the only one to have served for a period of two yearseventually turned out to be a confidence booster. It taught me that the basisfor good work is self-reliance and very importantly, time management. Not allof my entire two years were devoid of shortcomings. I learned to accept bothcriticism and praise with a positive frame of mind. My work involved organisingvarious events, that brought with them the opportunity to work and interactwith various kinds of people. This was a distinctively gratifying experiencefor me, which I feel would stand in good stead in the future, especially inlieu of any teaching experience.           In conclusion, I would like to add that the essence of University educationlies in the synergetic relationship between the student and his department. Ifeel that graduate study at your University will be the most logical extensionof my academic pursuits and a major step towards achieving my objectives.
