As a US citizen, from my point of view, I think the expansion of OPT for students who hold STEM degrees have more positive impacts than potential threat it brings due to two reasons:

1.        The expansion of OPT can improve the economy of USA. In the past many years, more and more foreign students have entered the USA with their eagerness for knowledge and considerable amount of investment. Not only can they provide substantial support to US education system but they can promote consumption and stimulate the real economy of US. Considering their financial background, their living expenses are imperative to the revival of US economy. They usually buy valuable and advanced products compared to local students. When they go to work, most of them need to purchase a car as a source of transportation. Based on my oberservation, many of them can afford a luxury car and this will be beneficial to US car industry. The OPT expansion show the sincere willing that foreign students are welcome to bring their culture and can attract more of them to come to the United States. Overall, it might be hard to believe but this is the reality we are really facing that US economy is fed by those students.
2.        It is fair to believe that foreign workers are a threat to US local workers, but it would be foolish to claim that the expansion of OPT would make a big difference between past and future. Five extra months actually will not challenge the contemporary working environment. The truth that foreign workers will eventually go back to their home country because of difficulty to acquire permanent resident remains unchanged. The difficulty is from the rigorous restrictions made by US government which would cost employers a lot to hire a foreign worker. In that case, companies prefer to hire the local tech workers instead of sponsoring foreign workers. The only thing that counts is foreign students can work a little bit longer than because of this expansion.

As far as I am concerned, the expansion of OPT will not create a severe impact on competition between foreign and local workers while it can bring a big fortune to US society.

I think the extension is not only necessity but a future trend. It is the most talented people, regardless of their race, beliefs, nationalities, that make this country prosperous. The greatness of US is not its economy, its military, but its tolerance. With the extension of OPT, there are at least 3 benefits.

1 Capture the most talented person, they are working for US and are paying a significant amount of tax, only with the help of whose US can maintain the technology leader position all around the world

2 Stimulate the marked for studying in US. Without the OPT extension, there would be a decrease in numbers of STEM students come to US for a higher level of education which had already brought much profit for US universities.

3 Companies will have a hard time seeking great candidates to work for them, which is bad for startup companies who are not that competitive. It is a pity if these potential companies closed for that reason
