. Waral dи,
River Town
Oracle Bones
Country Driving (个人觉得这个最好看,虽然其他也不错)

===================

===================

<River Town> (261-380/549 epub)#3 Week of April 10

73. There were no villages or walls, only rocks and dust and low rugged hills that were sharply shadowed by the desert sun.

74. The oasis towns appeared everyhour or two, risingsuddenly alongside the tracks and then disappearing just as quickly into therock and dirt and sand.

75. Despite the self-destruction of the Cultural Revolutionand the subsequentrush to open to the outside world, there was still a definite senseof what was Chinese, and I believed that this would help them survivemodernization.

76. My vacation was winding down, but I had no eagerness to leave. I likedthe lazy freedomof traveling, and I liked the uncertainty of my position here inXinjiang, where I had no job and even my race was in question.

77. I felt I had spent my first yearcoping with thehard part of being a waiguoren, and now I enjoyed all the benefits.

78. It results in the man’s making afull-fledged assault on the dangers of alcohol, week after week, inmind-numbing detail.

79. But even from my distance Isensed an enormous gap between the experiences of local women and men.

80. Fuling women also had theirshare of accessories that showed they were from the upper class, but on the wholethese indications were less bluntly obvious and materialistic than those of themen.

81. Alcohol was always a viable excuse forbad male behavior in Fuling.

82. While male drinking occasionallyled to aggression, I mostly disliked its tediousness.

83. Everything was further complicatedby the influence of traditional collective thinking.

84. For people in Fuling, the sense of selfseemed largely external; you were identified by the way that others viewed you. That had always been the goal of Confucianism.

85. The shift in itself was not soremarkable-irrational political purges happened the world over – but thestrange part was that so many of these victims were racked by shame, clearlybelieving that they were somehow flawed.

86. Often it seemed that in Chinathere was nointernal compass that was able to withstand these events.

87. Group mentality seemed particularlytroublesome for women, who lived under a strange combination of strictness anduncertainty. When compared to men, their traditional role in Chinesesociety was much narrower, but the new economy resulted in frighteningly vagueexpectations and demands. On the whole these changes were undoubtedly positive, but they were happening so quickly that freedom could easily look overwhelmingto somebody who was caught in the middle.

88. There are a few streaks ofsilver in his black hair.

Chap 1
1. “no art, however minor, demands less than total dedication if you want to excel in it.”. Waral dи,
2. In general, people outside some very demanding field don’t realize the extent to which success depends on constant (though often unconscious) effort.. ----
3. While the nerds were being trained to get the right answers, the popular kids were being trained to please.
4. In a typical American school, standards for coolness are so high (or at least, so specific) that you don’t have to be especially awkward to look awkward by comparison.
5. There is neither admiration at the bottom, nor noblesse oblige at the top. It’s kill or be killed.
6. It was something to do together, and because the drugs were illegal, it was a shared badge of rebellion.

“Pride and prejudice”, 262 page
Target for the rest of three days:
Page 1-Page 50:
Page 1. It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in
possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.
Page 3.My dear, you flatter me. I certainly have had my share of
beauty, but I do not pretend to be any thing extraordinary now.. 1point3acres
When a woman has five grown up daughters, she ought to give
over thinking of her own beauty.

. .иPage 5.We are not in a way to know what Mr. Bingley likes, said her
mother resentfully, ‘since we are not to visit.’

Page 7.An invitation to dinner was soon afterwards dispatched

Mr. Bingley was good looking and gentlemanlike; he had a
pleasant countenance, and easy, unaffected manners. His sisters
were fine women, with an air of decided fashion.

complete.

I would wish not to be hasty in censuring any one; but I always speak what I think.

Page 11 Bingley was sure of being liked
wherever he appeared, Darcy was continually giving offence.

Page 12 Vanity and pride are different things, though the words are often used
synonimously. A person may be proud without being vain. Pride
relates more to our opinion of ourselves, vanity to what we would have others think of us.’
. 1point 3acres
Page 14 In nine cases out of ten, a woman had better shew more affection than she feels.

Page 15 Of this she was perfectly unaware;—to her he was
only the man who made himself agreeable no where, and who had
not thought her handsome enough to dance with.

Page 18 Your conjecture is totally wrong, I assure you. From 1point 3acres bbs
That is exactly the question which I expected you to ask. A
lady’s imagination is very rapid; it jumps from admiration to love,
from love to matrimony in a moment.
