In general, the College of Computing expect applicants to be comfortable programming (C or C++ are generally expected at a minimum) and to have had at least several more advanced topics, such as Advanced OS, Networking, Java, Python, Theory, and/or Algorithms. Usually, if the applicant does not have a CS degree, they are looking for background that shows evidence that the applicant have equivalent skills. The College of Computing has stated that applicants will need a background in object-oriented programming in Java and in algorithms to succeed in this program. If you decide to take courses that provide skills such as object-oriented program, algorithms, and something that provides experience in programming in C. These CS courses would provide a better foundation for being considered for a graduate Computer Science program. If you do pursue some CS courses, the College of Computing would expect to see some sort of grade connected to the course or part of the evaluation process (some courses show a grade or percentile, others do not do any evaluation. generally these type of courses are non-credit courses and will not show your CS knowledge-base).
Non-Credt Courses:
Taking non-credit courses through various MOOC platforms (EdX, Coursera, and Udacity) does not guarantee admission to any Georgia Tech credit/degree programs. It may however enhance your application by showing you have the necessary background. If you do pursue some CS courses, the College of Computing would expect to see some sort of grade connected to the course or part of the evaluation process (some courses show a grade or percentile (a credit course) - which generally means a transcript is generated which you would submit once you completed the courses by sending it to the Graduate Admissions office.
If you decide to take credit courses during the application process you must submit transcripts from every academic institution you have or are attending. Therefore, during the application process you will submit/upload the most recent-updated unofficial transcript from your current academic institution along with a transcript from your previous college/university. Your current transcript will have the course and or courses your are taking along with the credit hours. Your current transcript will not have your final grade but will have all the credit hours you have accrued in taking the CS courses. Georgia Tech Graduate Admissions will process your transcript. Once you complete the courses you will send (by U.S. postal mail) your official transcript which should have your final grade to Ga Tech Graduate Admissions office.
