Ph.D. Openings at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) -Fall 2020

Two graduate Research Assistant positions are available in Dr. Shanbin Shi’s Research Group in the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Nuclear Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI).

Dr. Shanbin Shi joined the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Nuclear Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as an Assistant Professor in 2018. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Thermal Engineering from Southeast University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University respectively, and a Ph.D. degree in Nuclear Engineering at Purdue University.

Dr. Shi’s research is in thermal hydraulics and safety, and his group specializes in two-phase flow modeling and experiments, small modular reactor and heat pipe-cooled micro-reactor designs. As director of the Thermal-Hydraulics Laboratory (THL) at RPI, Dr. Shi and his research group study two-phase flow transport and heat transfer, flow instabilities in natural circulation driven systems, critical heat flux, and other critical phenomena to nuclear reactor safety and energy systems. The high-fidelity data developed are utilized for validating various codes such as system analysis codes, Computational Fluid Dynamics codes, as well as development of improved mechanistic models.

The qualified candidates are expected to have a background in nuclear engineering, thermal engineering, and chemical engineering or other related fields, as well as to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of heat transfer and fluid mechanics.
