从ECE remote成功argue到Pitts的argue过程总结

我前些天发过我成功argue了，但很多人问我怎么argue，也有一个人质疑我，因此我写这篇文章一来是给大家作为参考，尤其是那些被ECE发SV和remote的童鞋，二来澄清我自己，我确实是以我的艰辛和努力好不容易argue来的CMU主校区的录取。以下是我argue CMU ECE的所有邮件内容，我公开给大家，给大家做个参考。我不敢说是个成功例子，但肯定可以有可借鉴的地方，尤其对那些想argue的童鞋们。因为我申请的是CMU ECE和ETIM（Engineering and Technology innovation management）双学位，和一般申请ECE的童鞋不一样。如果想借鉴argue的童鞋可以继续往下看，认为没有价值的可以自动离开啦。在本文后面小米的回复中可以看到，我获得主校区录取的机会不是由于任何人拒掉CMU而得来的。

当然很郁闷，但是也算庆幸没有被拒掉。因此当然很关心这个项目，给小米往来邮件询问情况，在此我就不粘贴了，我想大家都热心的问了很多。这期间当然也收到好多别的学校ad和拒信T T

在3.19的晚上出现转机，当时已经不打算等CMU的情况下，我申的CMU的另一个ETIM的项目给我发了录取，而且还给了学费减免。随机我就高兴的发了人人状态告知好友们，以下是录取信：

Dear XX,

I am pleased to tell you that the graduate admissions committee would like to offer you admission to the Dual Degree MS program between the Electrical and Computer Engineering department and the Engineering & Technology Innovation Management program -- congratulations!

Your official admission letter is attached.

If you have any questions regarding E&TIM or the Dual Degree, please contact: Karen Fleischman, Assistant Executive Director, and regarding Electrical and Computer, contact Allyson Briney, ECE's Graduate Admissions Coordinator.

这个时候我很高兴，那是肯定的，但我在想既然ETIM要了我，ETIM规定2014summer要在美国实习的，这个是requirement。当时我片面的了解到，按照美国法律，我如果上ECE remote，在美国呆的时间不到9个月就没法获得OPT的机会。所以那时候我决定跟ECE去argue给我去美国上ECE的第一学期的机会，当然想去匹兹堡主校区了。（当时根本不知道opt和cpt区别，只是知道去美国参加工作要有在美国呆到一定时间的限制，就这样无脑的开始argue之旅，大神们勿喷）3.20我开始给小米发邮件。

Hi,

I have known very well I must gain a minimum of 96 units to obtain ECE degree by reading requirements carefully on your website.

But I still want to ask now that I have been admitted by ETIM, can I go to CMU campus to complete my first semester study, 2013 fall, in ECE?  According to the Dual Degree program structure, I should complete the traditional engineering program only in two semesters. But your explanation told me I will study for three semesters to obtain the ECE degree if I learn by Technology Enhanced Courses in the first semester. Moreover, learning in the real CMU campus in the first semester, which is my emphasis, can help me know more people, environment, etc, therefore whether I can join in CMU campus in the first semester now becomes the most important factor for me to decide whether I will choose CMU for my graduate study. I really like this Dual Degree Program with ECE and ETIM, but only learning chances but also Dual Degree courses structure. At last, I sincerely hope you can consider and help me obtain the chance to begin my study in CMU campus in the first semester. I am looking forward to your reply, because the deadline of submitting my decision is just around the corner.

I can’t give you an answer right now regarding the option of studying at the Pittsburgh campus in the fall, but I should be able to once our numbers are more finalized.  I’ll follow up with you as soon as I have more information.  Please feel free to contact me again as well.

Could you please permit me to submit my decision after March 31th which you indicate in the first email, and after you tell me whether I can be enrolled in CMU campus in the fall? And what is the exact date when I must submit my decision so that it cannot impact my admission?

当时的ddl还是3.30，因为我怕小米让我无限期的等下去拖延我到ddl，最后逼迫我同意这个remote program，所以我又追问小米我回复她去不去CMU的时间

I will extend your deadline to April 15th.  No problem at all. I can’t guarantee that you’ll have a spot on campus in the fall, but if any seats should open up you are at the top of the list.  I’ll keep you posted!

小米说希望下周给我回复，事实上，我一直从3.22等到了4.17. 收到这个回复后，我决定给admission manager和ECE的院长发邮件，因为他们权力更大。我随即给manager写了一封邮件，可以算是小ps了吧，同时这封邮件也抄送给了ECE的院长。如下：

Dear Tara:

My name is XX. I have been admitted by Dual Degree M.S. between the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering(Technology Enhanced Program) and the interdisciplinary Engineering and Technology Innovation Management M.S. Program with a tuition scholarship. I am very excited about the chance to study in CMU and I really like this Dual Degree program. According to the introduction of Dual Degree program on the website, I know very well the course structure that I will learn in ECE and E&TIM in four semesters. I really like this Dual Degree Program, not only learning chances but also Dual Degree courses structure. I thought I will graduate within two years(21 mouths) according to the introductions and the offer of admission from E&TIM. But Technology Enhanced Program means I cannot go to CMU campus in the first semester, 2013 fall, and I have to use one more extra semester, totally three semesters, to gain my degree in ECE. One semester out of CMU campus and one extra semester make me a little disappointed. You know the environment, academic atmosphere, good communications with professors and classmates cannot be achieved at home. Moreover, learning in the real CMU campus in the first semester, which is my emphasis, can help me know more people, environment, etc, therefore whether I can join in CMU campus in the first semester now becomes the most important factor for me to decide whether I will choose CMU for my graduate study instead of other graduate schools. I sincerely hope you can consider and help me obtain the chance to begin my study in CMU campus in this fall, so that I can obtain more chance to do the research, meet more professors and students, make more contributions and conplete this Dual Degree Program within two years. At last, I want to mention something which is not included in my application materials to let admissions committee know me better. Recently, because of our good performance on project concerning preliminary design of airplane's landing process and airport operation, my team that I led obtained the chance to participate in national final competition organized by European Aeronautic Defense and Space Company on behalf of Beihang University. In January, I obtained the chance to be an intern in BMW China. In addition, I took TOEFL test again last November and I got 26 in reading section and 23 in speaking section. I always spare no efforts and I continue making progress. I think my GRE scores, research experiences and startup experience represent my all kinds of abilities. I never give up anything and I hope you can believe I can learn everything better. I have communicated with Allyson and she knows my concerns. She told me she will give me an update for me next week. I have told my concerns to Ms. Tara Moe, though I don't know whether she is in charge of the review and whether what I did was suitable. But I hope you can understand me. I want to add several things which are, I think, good for my application to let committe know me better. Recently, because of our good performance on project concerning preliminary design of airplane's landing process and airport operation, my team that I led obtained the chance to participate in national final competition organized by European Aeronautic Defense and Space Company on behalf of Beihang University. In January, I obtained the chance to be an intern in BMW China. In addition, I took TOEFL test again last November and I got 26 in reading section and 23 in speaking section. In addition, I did not mention  in my resume and statement of purpose that I taught myself Principles of Computer Composition, Data Structure. As you know, I had a fast learning ability, a good academic record, ranking among the top 10%  in our college, professional experiences in Apple Inc., my startup company, etc, as referred in resume, statement of purpose and certificates. Our college is co-established by Beihang University and the French Central University Group to give students a wide range of academic background and to cultivate general engineers. Therefore, our college is slightly, in my view, different from other traditional colleges. I sincerely and urgently hope you can share what I mentioned above with the admissions committee.

You know I have been admitted by E&TIM in the Dual Degree program, therefore I will have a Summer Internship in the summer 2014 according to the student schedule. But the USCIS rules for international students say that students with F-1 who are able to work outside the campus must be in U.S. at least 1 year. It means I will not have the OPT chance in the summer 2014, if I cannot go to the CMU campus in the fall 2013. I really desire this summer internship.

In a word, again, I sincerely hope you can share what I mentioned above with the admissions committee and help me be enrolled in CMU campus in the fall.

One thing you should know that is that it is possible, if you take three ECE courses via our technology enhance program, in your first semester to complete both degrees in three additional semesters on campus.

他说两三天回复我，事实是让我等到4.17. 但是这封邮件他回复我关于课程设置的问题，让我瞬间感觉我之前的argue理由已经不成立了。但我没有放弃。我给他回复：

Thank you very much for your understanding!

If I take three courses via technology enhanced program, I can only spend one semester in ECE, in the campus. You know if so, I will lose a lot chances. For example, I will lose many face-to-face chances of communicating with professors and doing the research. I am self-motivated and I have a strong plan of my future. I would like to pursue a PhD in my interested field. I believe I have a strong ability to learn and to do the research, because I had many research and leadership experiences. And I believe I can do very well while studying in ECE. But I have to admit that I do not like this "remote" program.

In addition, if I choose this CMU's Dual Degree program, I will spend my second semester(2014 spring) in E&TIM in Pittsburgh campus. Therefore, I sincerely hope you cansider my enrollment in Pittsburgh campus in ECE in this fall.

我继续给他回复，我又加了一些理由去argue，同时提了一句我想去匹兹堡而不是SV。之后我就持续等待，后来，我觉得只和ECE一个学院argue还不够，我想跟ETIM那边也施加压力，提高我被录取的可能性。以下是我4.5给ETIM小米发邮件的内容，同时抄送给了ETIM的院长。如下：

Hi Karen,

I consulted the Chair of ECE about my enrollment in the fall 2 weeks ago, and ECE did not solve my problem regarding to the summer internship. You know I have been admitted by ECE's so-called "Techonology enhanced program", but according to US government policy and USCIS rules, I cannot have my summer internship in the summer 2014. Therefore, I think I should be considered to be enrolled in this fall, not participating in this remote program. You know I love this Dual Degree program and CMU's culture. Now I have been waiting for 2 weeks. I am trying to contact you and hope you can help me to be enrolled in ECE in this fall.

The following is the content of our communication 2 weeks ago. I wrote to Allyson, copied to ECE chair and ECE chair replied me.

我还是以我不能实习为理由进行argue，后来我知道这样的理由根本不成立，但我当时还是尝试了。这封邮件后面我复制粘贴了我之前给ECE院长邮件内容和他的回复，为节省空间就不粘贴上了，回复可以看上文。因为我好久没有得到ECE院长说的回复了，4.5这天我又给院长发了封邮件，如下：

Ed Schlesinger,

I really want to know whether there has been a seat opened up and whether the decision has been made. You know my situation. I have been anxiously waiting for many days and I will undoubtedly appreciate that you give me a seat to attend the campus in the fall.

I asked many friends in America and looked up a lot of information. It indicates that if I do not enter US this fall, I cannot work in the summer 2014. I have consulted with ETIM's chair and coordinator about my situation and I am waiting for their reply.

I know you are very very busy, therefore I feel sorry for my disturbance. Thank you again for your help.

我还是以不能实习为理由再尝试了一下argue。4.6ETIM给我回复邮件了，内容如下：

Hi XX:

I am consulting with our Office of International Education (OIE) regarding your question.  My understanding is that since the E&TIM summer internship is a requirement of the E&TIM program, our students are able to participate/work in summer internships despite their coming to CMU in the U.S. for the first time for the Spring Semester and not being in the U.S. for a full year prior to the summer.

I will let you know as soon as this is verified back to my by CMU's Office of International Education (OIE) as they are the experts in this area. Again, I believe that because the summer internship is a requirement of the E&TIM program, you can work in a summer internship despite not having been in the U.S. for a year.

之后又是无限期的等待，我在4.12的时候又沉不住气了，又给ECE院长发了封邮件催促。如下：

I feel sorry for disturbing you, but today is the only workday before 4.15, the deadline for the admission replies. I am sincerely and urgently looking forward to your reply regarding my enrollment in Pittsburgh campus in this fall and the internship or OPT in the summer 2014. I tried to communicate with the officers in ETIM regarding my OPT in the summer 2014. They were not sure of my internship legality, if I cannot be enrolled in the school more than two semesters. But according to the USCIS rules, it is indeed illegal. But that internship in America is not only what I desire but also ETIM's requirement. Like what I said before, I really like this Dual Degree program and ETIM gave me the tuition scholarship. I believe I am able to successfully complete my two-year-study in ECE and ETIM without any difficulties and I can make a great contribution to CMU, and maybe I can get the chance to pursue PhD degree in ECE. You know 4.15 is also the deadline for other schools. I have to admit that CMU is my dream school, therefore I spent these days consulting with you. Without your reply or your help, it is very difficult for me to choose and decide. In a word, I sincerely hope you can help me and give the chance to register in this fall like other normal students. 我的argue理由还是差不多，多夸夸CMU是我的dream school，跟他说我还有好多学校抉择。第二天他的回复，让我感到了没有希望。但还好我的status没有更新。如下：

As far as I know there is no issue with your OPT....since it is a requirement of the ETIM program my understanding is that you can do that even after one semester.

我就继续等待，一直到了4.17. 我由于手里有别的学校犹豫，也有CMU这个双学位项目，我4.15这几天实在是很纠结。CMU这一直拖延，让我越来越对ECE没有信心，但我又不想放弃，当然我也不舍得另一个自费PhD项目。很纠结。由于ETIM的ddl是4.15，而ECE还没给我消息，我当时就打算先从了ETIM和另一个学校的项目，手里握着两个等这个ECE，心想如果ECE不同意我去匹兹堡我就再拒掉ETIM，如果ECE同意我就拒掉另一个学校。同事我怕节外生枝，而且又想给ECE施加压力，我按照小米说的在4.17早上（美国4.16晚上）登陆ECE网申系统保存了我的决定。但当时我以外的发现，原来网申系统的4.15ddl改成了4.30，而且上面只有save my decision的选项，我就选择不接受，心想先保存一下，4.30之前再改就行了，没想到保存了之后是一个成功提交的页面。我瞬间不知道怎么办了，随即又给小米发了两封邮件：

Dear Allyson,

Just now, when I tried to see whether the system was available, I knew the deadline is April 30th. But I saved my decision. The day before yesterday, I declined all graduate schools who did not permit to delay my decision. It seemed I was gambling, because I don't know whether I will be enrolled in this fall. I am now indeed worried and anxious. I will keep waiting for your reply. Is it related to the specialities that I chose? Because I forgot all specialities that I chose, if necessary and if the speciality of the open seat is also my interest, may I choose specialities again to get a seat to be enrolled in this fall?

我为了施加压力，说我已经拒绝其他学校了，说我自己在赌博，同时我询问了是不是与我选的专业相关。大神们忽略单词拼写错误。结果令我高兴的是4.18我收到小米的邮件告诉我被录取了：

I just heard from our Department Head that we are able to offer you a spot on the Pittsburgh campus this fall! I’ve very excited for you and glad that worked out. I will send you an updated admission letter probably tomorrow.

随后我就奔走相告，在一亩三分地和群里通知大家这个好消息，同时帮助大家分析我成功的原因。当然我没忘记给院长和小米发了我的感谢信。在此就不赘述了。以上是我的argue经历，和我每个时期的想法。

但是，4.19昨天我被人认为是我忽悠她让她放弃了CMU的ECE，从而把这个录取席位让给了我。我当时感到无助、无奈和不公。我一个月的努力，被指为坐享其成，是谁也不爽吧。希望此人看到我这篇文章的时候能够理解我是辛辛苦苦argue来的，再有什么问题，私下联系我好了，满世界的去造谣于情于理都说不过去。误会在所难免。我昨天特意给小米发了邮件询问我的录取是怎么来的，同时跟她表达了心中的郁闷。以下是她的回复：

Hi XX,

I’m out of the office today but want to help address any concerns that you have.  I don’t want you to feel upset or depressed about the situation.  I think it may be easier to talk on the phone so that I can understand more clearly why you are upset.  Do you have time to talk on Monday? Just to clarify, we make our admission decisions independent of input from students.  You were offered a seat at the Pittsburgh campus because you were in a very unique situation having been admitted to the E&TIM dual degree program.  This decision on our end, would have no impact on any other admitted student.  So, you should not feel as though you took another student’s seat on campus.  I hope this helps to ease your concerns.  Again, please let me know if you can talk on Monday.  I think it would help me to better answer your questions.

小米的声明我也加了高亮，希望大家和此人看到，我的录取和任何拒掉ECE的人无关。当然从侧面说明，如果童鞋们也申请了双学位项目是肯定可以argue到主校区的。因此我不清楚，没有申请双学位的SV和remote各位能不能成功argue。ECE的ddl是4.30，如果大家想argue尝试一下，要抓紧了。想改decision的话可以联系Allyson ECE的小米去更改，至少我了解的是这样。我还听说，有人因为说自己的女朋友在UPittsburgh，因此argue成功到主校区的，不知道是真是假，大家可以编理由试试。另外，我想说ECE的小米太好了，我心情不好了，她要和我通电话跟她诉苦= =。。。如果再质疑的话，我觉得我让小米给你打电话好了，我觉得小米或者CMU非常注重学生的声誉问题。大家都是出国读书的人啦，互相帮助，互相理解。

我写这篇文章不只是为了声明我的无辜，而且也是给大家提供借鉴。文中有什么不妥的地方，大神们勿喷，有问题私下联系我好了。

相比下，我发觉我argue的理由太挫了：那远程的4门课不喜欢……

换成spring没必要吧，一般都是argue到sv或主校区吧

看了快一个小时，终于看完了。
小驰实在太牛B了。在这里看到了契而不舍的精神。我真的很佩服楼主。像这样能坚持不懈的人，相信做什么事都会成功的。看起来小驰应该会是一个非常非常成功的student在CMU。 希望我们在CMU能成为很好的朋友。能认识这样优秀的学弟真心觉得很荣幸很荣幸！

不过 关于女朋友那一段，最好不要说谎吧。这样有损声誉。

那关于实习 我不太明白，没呆够9个月到底能不能实习呢？ 或许还是不行的吧。不然院长不会突然改决定。一般情况的话学校会直接回复reapply
