The New York State Attorney General's office interviewed Amazon employees at a handful of institutions in New York state as allegations of retaliation against employees have become a focus of the investigation. In a letter to Amazon in April, Letitia James, New York's attorney general, said it was investigating whether the company violated federal labor laws or state whistleblower laws when it fired a worker who organized a strike at the Staten Island plant. The worker, Chris Smalls, led a protest demanding that Amazon close the warehouse and put in place more security measures. The letter called on Amazon to reinstate Smalls and turn over all internal communications related to worker complaints and protests since Feb. 1. Now, by gathering that information, the New York Attorney General's office is seeking to build a case that Amazon has retaliated against workers who have spoken publicly about the condition of its warehouses, such as firing them. source
