Edited in 06/22/2013 Many people recently asked me about “how to get to the airport from bus station at Port Authority Bus Terminal”, even including somesenior students at UConn. As a person dwelled in NYC for 21 months, I think I know the most common route between them.
1. FromNYC Airport to Port Authority (or vise versa)1.1 From JFK Airport 1.1.1 The fastest way:Take taxi: ($45) You have to spend $45 for thesingle ride. I do not think that you have to pay the gratuity. However, welcome others to correct me on this, because I admit that I rarely use taxi as a poor guy. Money Cost: $45; Time Cost: should be within 50 mins. Comment: Fast, convenient, but expensive. .google и
1.1.2 The cheapest way: Take bus+subway ($2.50)
That’s my favorite way! Only $2.5 for a single ride. However, be aware that you are with few luggages that you can hold by yourself (or someone help you with that). Route: a.Take (free) airtrain go to Terminal 5 (5 mins [waiting time counted]); file:///C:\Users\Luh\AppData\Local\Temp\msohtmlclip1\01\clip_image004.png
b. Walk across the bridge betweenairtrain platform and the terminal building and Take the elevator to go to the ground. Walk out and make a right turn (towards west bound). You will see the bus-stop 50m ahead ofyou. c. Take the Q10 Bus to the intersection of Liberty Ave and 119th St (20-30min[waiting time counted]) d. Take the A train to 42nd St-Port Authority Terminal (50-60 min [waiting time counted]) file:///C:\Users\Luh\AppData\Local\Temp\msohtmlclip1\01\clip_image009.png
Total time cost: 90-100 min;Money cost: $2.50 Notes:1. Please check the updated fare on MTA official website. The fares for regular MTA card and the single-ride card are slightly different. You can freely transfer from bus to subway or from subway to bus without extra payment in 2 hours (Probably 2 hours); however, transfer from one bus to another is not free. You also have to pay if you walk outside the subway station then re-enter it. 2. Push the “STOP” button when the bus approaching the destination. 3. Take the airtrain within the airport is free. 4. Pay attention to the subway station’s name (sign on the platform),do not miss your destination. 1.1.3 Take Airtrain and subway ($7.50)
Take Airtrain to Howard Beach (15-25 mins [waiting time counted]) file:///C:\Users\Luh\AppData\Local\Temp\msohtmlclip1\01\clip_image012.png Take A train to PortAuthority Terminal (50-60 mins [waiting time counted]) Total Time Cost: 85-95 mins; Money Cost: $7.50 1.1.4 Second Fastest Way: Call to rent a car in advance (in Chinese: 电招车)Numerous drivers in NYC have that business, like the guy’sjob in the Movie (北京遇上西雅图). You can check on some page in Chinese Newspaper for further Ads. Here’s an example: (718)666-5350 Mr. Zheng (just talk with him in Chinese) The regular fee for JFK to 8th Ave (Brooklyn) is $30 or $32. For PortAuthority, I think it will be more expensive. However, you can search for carpool. I have no intention to make an ad here.
1.1.5 Take the Express Bus (50-60mins; $16)From7:30am to 8:00pm, every 30 mins, there will be a bus set out. They also havesimilar express bus to LGA and Newark airport.
1.2 From Newark Airport to Port AuthorityFor taxi,it is similar with JFK. However, the time spent will be shorter because the distance is shorter. Forpublic transportation, there are two ways: 1. Take path to WTC (World Trade Center), then take the subway (A Train or C train, 205th ST Bound) to Port Authority Terminal: $1.5+$2.5=$4.0 2. Take path to 34th St Penn Station, then walk to Port Authority BusTerminal: use NJ Transit, cost $5.00
1.3 From LGA to Port AuthorityPublic Transportation: Take M60 Bus to Astoria Blvd, then take the N train or Q train to Time Square-42ndSt, walk to Port Authority Terminal. file:///C:\Users\Luh\AppData\Local\Temp\msohtmlclip1\01\clip_image016.png
2. From NYC to UConn (Storrs)1. Rent a car from Airport (JFK, LGA or Newark) and drive it to Hartford. Then Return the vehicle at Hartford, CT. 2. Take bus to Storrs: 1. Peterpan:$25: Start from Port Authority Terminal; 2. Megabus:$7 to $29 (if you reserved in advance, the price tends to be cheaper). Note: If you take more than 2 large luggages (including 2), you’d better buy 2 tickets in advance. Otherwise, you will probably be charged $35 for each extra luggage. The bus-stop at NYC is at 11st Ave, 34th St. If you take the subway at 34th St station (Say, Koreantown area), you can take M34 Bus to 11st Ave. Remember to print a paper ticket at the vending machine before you get on the bus. (This is the special characteristic for M34. Usually, you do not have to do this on other bus lines under MTA.)
There are so many buses between NYC and Hartford. So you may also stay at NYC or Hartford for one night. As far as I know, Chinatowns in NYC (like 8th ave or Flashing) have some cheap place to live. For example, $50 or $60 for one room (2 person) per night.
