Shuai Research Group in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at The George Washington University is looking for a M.S./Ph.D. student who is interested in working on innovative materials for environmental pathogen control. The position is available as soon as Jan 2021. Our group has extensive experiences in photocatalysis, nanotechnology, and microbiology, and we are working on multidisciplinary projects at water-energy-health nexus. Available topics include (i) developing electrospun air filters for SARS-CoV-2 control, (ii) understanding the presence, persistence, and inactivation of rotavirus and norovirus in water and wastewater, and (iii) leveraging photocatalysis for pathogenic biofilm control. Projects are currently supported by NSF or USDA-NIFA (materwatersus.weebly.com/pathogen-control.html). We are looking for candidates who have a strong background at the interface between innovative materials and microbiology. We are especially interested in candidates with past experiences in molecular microbiology, virology, nanotechnology, and environmental engineering.
